Job summary

The University of Iowa College of Engineering seeks an Academic Advisor and Recruitment Specialist to provide comprehensive academic advising and transition support to undergraduate engineering students, particularly first-year cohorts. You will assist with academic planning, navigation of university policies, and identify opportunities for student success.

Job description

Academic Advisor and Recruitment Specialist

As a member of the Engineering Student Success Team (eSST), the Academic Advisor and Recruitment Specialist is primarily responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising and transition support to undergraduate engineering students, with particular responsibility for an assigned population of first-year students. The position advises students individually and in groups throughout orientation and the academic year; assists with academic planning, navigation of University and College policies and resources, and identification of opportunities that support student success; and contributes to advising strategies and programs that promote persistence and retention.

In addition to these primary advising responsibilities, the position supports prospective student recruitment and engagement and contributes to current student engagement through the coordination of designated College of Engineering programs, initiatives, and resources.

• Serve as primary academic advisor for a selected population of students.
• Advise students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions, advising activities, referrals, outreach efforts, and other relevant information within university systems.
• Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career.
• Introduce students to opportunities that will enrich their academic experience, facilitate their academic and personal development, and support their educational success.
• Teach students how to manage the college experience, navigate the University, make informed decisions, and assume responsibility for their academic success.
• Represent the University of Iowa College of Engineering to targeted constituencies. Speak to groups and individual students; communicate with staff, faculty, and administrators at high schools and community colleges to promote the College of Engineering and recruit new Engineering students.
• Deliver presentations and information sessions for prospective students and their guests to promote enrollment in the College of Engineering.
• Participate in recruitment, hiring, training, and professional development of the Student Ambassador staff.
• Serve as the Engineering Campus Partner for the People in Engineering (PIE) Living and Learning Community.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of related experience in student recruitment, admissions, academic advising, academic support and retention, career advising, residence life, student life, or K-12 education. Relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience will be considered, with consideration given to the scope, duration, and level of responsibility of the experience.
• Excellent communication and listening skills: strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
• Demonstrated success working in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, organized, and proactive in completing work assignments.
• Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.

Desired Qualifications

• Master’s degree in student development or related area.
• One or more years of experience in advising or student recruitment and admissions.
• Demonstrated success in fostering a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
• A valid driver’s license and continued compliance with the standards of the University Driving Policy.
