Job Description:

Serves as a student advisor, works collaboratively with faculty in respective academic departments, facilitates summer advising and registration, monitors students’ academic progress and academic standing, assists students with meeting degree requirements, manages caseloads, and provides additional assistance to students.

Job Duties

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in mandatory professional development facilitated by the Advising Director, events, activities and programs which contribute to student retention and graduation. Attends and participates in academic advising professional development opportunities.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty in respective academic departments to provide students with up-to-date major-specific options for curricular exploration and with other campus organizations to facilitate student success.
  • Facilitates summer advising and registration through individual student meetings, group advising sessions, and curriculum presentations for prospective, new, and current students.
  • Monitors students’ academic progress and academic standing. Monitors students’ re-enrollment at the end of each registration period and semester. Actively participates in student retention through early alerts and midterm checkpoints with at-risk students by providing guidance and resources (e.g., GPA review, course scheduling modifications, campus referrals).
  • Assists students with meeting graduation requirements with degree checklists, semester plans, degree audits, course scheduling, exploring course substitutions, study abroad, and transfer options (when applicable).
  • Assists students with gaining Pathways Curriculum proficiency and navigating Trinity’s automated systems.
  • Advises students using theories, practices, and methodologies to facilitate successful navigation of their academic and professional paths, encouraging exploration of majors and minors to connect academic interests with career goals.
  • Manages student advising caseload with intentional outreach and presence to foster positive relationships through email, online advising, in-person appointments, walk-ins, and group advising. Maintains accurate records of student contacts and advising. Reviews student records and test scores for appropriate course recommendations.
  • Provides consistent, accurate, and student-centered academic advising for all First-Year and Sophomore students through to declaration of a major.
  • Interprets and explains the University’s General, Pathways, and Major/Minor curricula requirements.
  • Facilitates preliminary discussions on internships and experiential learning, referring students to appropriate campus resources.
Education

Required: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university.

Preferred: Master's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university.

Experience

Required: 1 to 3 years of experience working in higher education, with students in an academic setting. Two years of direct academic advising or extensive experience in counseling, group work assessment, and administration of academic programs (e.g., admissions, registrar, career services, orientation).

Preferred: 3 to 5 years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required: Student-centered advising philosophy based on holistic and developmental advising theories. Attention to detail, documentation, and curricular proficiency. Commitment to holistic and developmental advising theories.
