Job summary

Craven Community College in New Bern, NC, is seeking an Academic Advisor to provide comprehensive advising, assist with admissions processes, and support student retention and success. The role guides students on graduation and transfer requirements, aids in career planning, and collaborates across departments to promote student learning and achievement aligned with the College's mission.

The advisor will mentor students and participate in orientation and First Year Experience initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, social work or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning
  • Two (2) years' experience in academic advising, career development or other related function within higher education
  • Experience using Colleague (preferred)
  • Experience within the North Carolina Community College System (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service and assistance to internal and external customers through walk-in, telephone and email
  • Provide academic advising to new and returning students
  • Assist with review of transcripts, test scores and other admission documents, processes class registrations and respond to admission inquiries
  • Advise CCP students and Craven Early College students assisting with transition to career and college success
  • Maintain effective communication with newly enrolled and prospective students utilizing various modes of technology
  • Participate in cross-training activities for all areas of service in the First Stop (advising, testing, intake/admissions, financial aid)
  • Provide comprehensive academic and career planning services for students such as assessments and development of an educational plan
  • Collaborate with various areas within and outside of Student Services to facilitate recruitment, success, retention and persistence
  • Assist with development of goals, objectives and learning outcomes for Student Services in support of the College's strategic plan
  • Participate in open houses, new student orientation and First Year Experience initiatives
  • Teach college success skills courses
  • Identify target groups for recruitment and outreach activities on and off campus; visit high schools, workplaces, etc.
  • Promote Career and College Promise program to prospective high school students
  • Participate in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Perform other duties and projects in support of the College's mission

Job description

Occupational Summary

The Academic Advisor provides advising services to new and returning students in areas related to academic advisement including graduation and transfer requirements; advising students on various careers and on the requirements necessary for achieving career goals; develops and implements student outreach/recruitment; and monitors student progress. This position also provides guidance and mentoring to optimize the student experience to improve student retention and success and assist the College in achieving its mission and vision of service to the community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides excellent customer service and assistance to internal and external customers through walk-in, telephone and email

  • Provides support for daily functions of Admissions such as review of transcripts, test scores, and other admission documents, processes class registrations and responds to admission inquiries
  • Advises CCP students and Craven Early College students assisting with transition to career and college success
  • Maintains effective communication with newly enrolled and prospective students utilizing various modes of technology
  • Participates in cross-training activities for all areas of service in the First Stop (advising, testing, intake/admissions, financial aid)
  • Provides comprehensive academic and career planning services for students such as academic and career planning assessments, interpreting assessments, and assisting students in the development of an educational plan to address interests, skills and abilities
  • Collaborates with various areas within and outside of the Student Services unit to facilitate student recruitment, student success, retention and persistence
  • Assists with development of goals, objectives and learning outcomes for the Student Services unit in support of the College's strategic plan
  • Participates in open houses, new student orientation and various First Year Experience initiatives
  • Teaches college success skills courses
  • Assists in the identification of target groups for comprehensive student recruitment and outreach activities on and off campus; makes visits to high schools, workplaces, etc.
  • Promotes the Career and College Promise program to prospective high school students
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, social work or other closely related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning

Two (2) years' experience in academic advising, career development or other related function within higher education

  • Experience using Colleague
  • Experience within the North Carolina Community College System
