Academic Advisor

Position Summary:

The Advisement Office, within Student Affairs and Enrollment, seeks a full-time Academic Advisor, primarily based at our Journal Square campus in Jersey City, NJ. Staff should be flexible regarding work location and may need to travel to our Union City, NJ campus to support office needs. Academic Advisors support a specific student population and assist with general advisement for students seeking help on campus. This role will mainly support students within the Hudson Scholars program.


Advisors are expected to enroll in or complete a relevant graduate program within one year of hire, supporting their professional development. The college offers tuition reimbursement, flexible scheduling, and promotes long-term career growth.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide academic guidance on major exploration, transfer opportunities, educational programs, and course enrollment.
  2. Assist students with enrollment procedures, prerequisites, and course sequencing.
  3. Maintain student records following office and institutional guidelines.
  4. Coordinate with Senior Assistant Directors on program communications and outreach.
  5. Guide students to campus resources such as tutoring, career services, transfer services, and financial aid.
  6. Collaborate with the Hudson Scholars team and Advisement staff on student events and workshops.
  7. Help students understand academic requirements and select courses to meet degree goals.
  8. Inform students about academic policies, deadlines, and procedures.
  9. Support campus operations by assisting walk-in students and partnering with part-time staff during advisement.
  10. Collect and manage data for program administration.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
  12. Occasional evenings and weekends for events.
  13. Work at both Journal Square and North Hudson campuses.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, Human Services, or related field.
  2. 1-2 years of experience in student support or case management.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Airtable, or similar CRM software.
  5. Strong interpersonal and listening skills.
  6. Problem-solving and innovative thinking abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Ability to collaborate and adapt in a team environment.
  2. Bi-lingual skills, especially in Spanish or Arabic, are a plus.
  3. Proactive attitude and eagerness to learn.
  4. Experience in higher education with diverse student populations.
  5. Knowledge of Ellucian-Colleague and EAB Navigate is advantageous.
