Job summary

Therm-x of California is seeking a Prototype Machinist to join our Hayward, CA team. You will work on prototyping heater, sensor, and related components using a 5-axis Okuma mill and CNC lathe, developing first articles from drawings with close engineering collaboration.

You will program toolpaths, verify simulations, and optimize setups for one-off parts, while supporting NPI with fixtures, data collection, and shop-floor tasks. Robust attention to safety and quality is essential.

Qualifications

• Hands-on 5-axis CNC milling experience with setup and operation.
• Strong CAM programming skills for multi-sided 5-axis toolpaths.
• Solid grounding in milling principles: feeds, speeds, tooling, fixtures.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate the 5-axis Okuma mill (and CNC lathe) to produce prototype parts, tools, and fixtures.
• Generate efficient CAM programs from 3D models, including multi-sided and simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths.
• Verify toolpaths in simulation before cutting and catch collisions at the CAM stage.
• Select cutting tools, feeds and speeds for each prototype material and geometry.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings with GD&T; confirm critical dimensions.
• Inspect parts with calipers, micrometers, height gauges; record results for FAI.
• Collaborate with engineers to flag drawing/manufacturability issues; provide DFM input.
• Build basic fixtures and assist with prototype assembly and data collection.
• Maintain a clean, safe prototyping cell and track tooling/conditions.
• Support NPI technician work outside the cell: test setups and general shop-floor support.
