Job summary

Therm-x of California is seeking a Prototype Machinist / NPI Technician to work with the NPI Engineering team on new heater, sensor, and source designs from drawing to first working part. The role uses a 5-axis Okuma mill and CNC lathe, with emphasis on accurate first articles.

Responsibilities include CAM programming, fixture development, and collaboration with design engineers to optimize tolerances and manufacturability for rapid prototyping.

Qualifications

• Hands-on 5-axis CNC milling experience with programming, setup, and operation.
• Ability to read drawings with GD&T and verify tolerances.
• Experience selecting tools, feeds, speeds, and fixtures for prototype parts.
• Strong CAM programming skills across multiple platforms and post-processing.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and operate the 5-axis Okuma mill (and CNC lathe) to produce prototype parts, tools, and fixtures.
• Generate efficient CAM programs from 3D models, including multi-sided 5-axis toolpaths.
• Verify toolpaths in simulation to catch collisions before cutting.
• Select cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and fixtures for each part.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings with GD&T to confirm critical dimensions.
• Inspect parts with calipers, micrometers, and height gauges; document FAI results.
• Collaborate with engineers to address manufacturability and DFMA issues.
• Build basic test fixtures and assist with prototype assembly and data collection.
• Maintain a clean, safe prototyping cell and track tooling and machine condition.
