Job summary

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• No prior experience necessary.

Responsibilities

• Operate machines in a safe and productive manner.
• Lay out reference points and dimensions on metal stock for processing.
• Fit and align fabricated parts to be welded or assembled.
• Plan layouts from blueprints and templates using basic trigonometry.
• Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.
• Mark curves, lines, holes and welding symbols on workpieces.
• Compute layout dimensions and verify template positions with gauges and indicators.
• Lift and position workpieces using manual methods or hoists.
• Plan locations and sequences of cutting, drilling, bending, rolling, punching and welding.
• Inspect machined parts for conformance to specifications.
• Brace parts in position within hulls or ships for riveting or welding.
• Add dimensional details to blueprints or drawings as needed.
• Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, training, directing, coaching and counseling shop employees.
