Job summary

RT Patterson has an immediate opening in our Merrillville, Indiana office for a full-time Structural Designer to design and prepare construction documentation (drawings) for heavy industrial equipment and structural foundations, piles, mill buildings, structures/platforms, and pipe racks/supports.

To do well in this role you have extensive experience as a Structural Designer in an industrial setting, with strong AutoCAD skills and knowledge of steel and concrete construction methods.

Qualifications

• Certificate of Drafting and Design is required to apply.
• ABET-accredited Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Structural Engineering or Engineering Technology.
• 4+ years of continuous employment in a similar role, incl. internship or coop.

Responsibilities

• Design structural steel platforms and equipment supports.
• Design basic concrete structures and foundations.
• Conduct field/site trips to obtain information and measurements.
• Experience with structures: steel platforms, pipe supports, cable trays, piers, slabs.
• Check construction drawing sets for accuracy.
• Review and approve shop fabrication detail drawings.

RT Patterson has an immediate opening in our Merrillville, Indiana office for a full-time Structural Designer to design and prepare construction documentation (drawings) for heavy industrial equipment and structural foundations, piles, mill buildings, structures/platforms, and pipe racks/supports. To do well in this role you have extensive experience as a Structural Designer in an industrial setting.

Structural Designer Responsibilities:

• Perform independent design of light structures including building steel, stairs/platforms, and equipment supports.
• Perform independent design of basic concrete structures/foundations including footers, trenches, floor slabs and walls.
• Conduct field/site trips and investigations associated with a project to obtain needed information and measurements.
• Experience with structural design that includes structural steel platforms, equipment supports, pile support systems, pipe supports, cable tray supports, pipe & cable tray racks & bridges, industrial buildings, reinforced concrete foundations, piers, pile caps and slabs.
• Checking of Construction drawing sets.
• Review and Approval of Shop Fabrication Detail drawings.

Structural Designer Requirements:

• Minimum of a Certificate of Drafting and Design is required to apply; Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited school preferred.
• 4+ years continuous employment experience in similar job role, including internship or cooperative program experience.
• Possess a working knowledge of structural steel materials and framing techniques.
• Possess a working knowledge of concrete construction methodology and reinforcement.
• Possess a working knowledge of current industrial construction methods.
• Working knowledge of applicable industry codes/practices for design, construction and safety
• Proficient in the use of 2D/3D AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft TEAMS.
• Ability to travel to client sites and perform physically demanding field activities to obtain needed information.
• Exhibits high attention level to details and accuracy.
• Good problem-solving abilities, ability to think outside-the-box.
• Good time management skills with the ability to multi-task without losing focus or precision.
• A strong drive to deliver against schedule, budget and quality commitments
• Familiarity with health and safety regulations
• Strong oral and written English communication skills.
