Job summary

Westlake is seeking an Occupational Safety Specialist I – Emergency Response to provide 24/7 emergency response capabilities for our chemical manufacturing facility in Louisiana. This role blends hands-on response with training, inspections, and coaching to support a strong safety culture and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Associate degree with 3–5 years of emergency response or related field, or high school diploma with 5–7 years of experience.
• Minimum of five years of industrial experience in a chemical plant, refinery, or similar high‑hazard atmosphere.
• Experience in On-Scene Incident Command of fire, rescue, medical, and hazmat emergencies.
• Current National Registry and Louisiana EMT certification (or ability to obtain reciprocity within defined timeframe).
• Must obtain within 12 months: Firefighting (industrial), Technical Rescue Services (confined space/high-angle), HazMat Technician, and other training as designated.
• Demonstrated ability to educate and train employees in health and safety principles.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work effectively in a team environment.
• Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergencies as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
• Fire suppression and prevention activities, hazmat, rescue, and medical emergencies.
• Operate and maintain emergency response vehicles and equipment in a ready state.
• Conduct regular inspections to detect hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Assist investigations of alarms, fires, hazmat incidents, incl. root-cause analysis.
• Lead monthly ERT training and annual specialized training.
• Perform administrative duties related to training and scheduling.
• Assists in data collection for emergency response metrics and supports safety policies and procedures.
• Occasionally serve as On-Scene Incident Commander for a facility or unit.
