Job summary

Westlake is seeking an Occupational Safety Specialist I – Emergency Response to provide 24/7 emergency response capabilities at our chemical manufacturing facility. The role blends hands-on response with training, inspections, and coaching to uphold safety culture and compliance.

You will lead monthly ERT training, participate in investigations, support permit review, and help manage data on drills and safety performance.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent with 3–5 years in emergency response or 5–7 years with HS diploma.
• Minimum of five years of industrial experience in chemical plants or similar high-hazard environments.
• Experience in On-Scene Incident Command of fire, rescue, medical, and hazmat emergencies.
• Current National Registry and Louisiana EMT certification (or eligibility).
• Must obtain within 12 months of hire required certifications in firefighting, technical rescue, hazmat, and other specialized training.
• Demonstrated ability to educate and train employees; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Responds as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) to incidents.
• Performs response activities per NFPA, federal, state, and site standards.
• May participate in ICC and serve as OSIC for a facility or unit.
• Operates and maintains emergency response vehicles and equipment.
• Conducts regular inspections to detect hazards and follows up on corrective actions.
• Assists in investigations of alarms, fires, hazmat releases; conducts root cause analysis.
• Assists in evaluating permits and field inspections for compliance.
• Leads monthly ERT training and annual specialized training.
• Performs administrative duties related to training and records.
• Provides coaching on safety policies with the Safety department.
• Conducts safety observations to promote safe behaviors.
• Assumes duties for other Safety staff as needed.
• Compiles data related to emergency drills and safety metrics.
