Job summary

Chesterfield County Public Schools is seeking an Instructional Assistant to support special education teachers in delivering instruction and managing classrooms for students with IEPs. The role includes one-on-one and small-group assistance, recording progress, and clerical support to ensure smooth daily operations.

Responsibilities include bus assistance, supervision during lunch/recess, and helping implement accommodations and health-related procedures as outlined in the IEP.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of childhood growth and development; behavior management; clerical procedures; and general academic subjects sufficient to teach others.
• Ability to supervise children in the absence of the teacher; perform basic clerical tasks; communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow instructions.
• Ability to work professionally with students and staff.
• High School diploma, training, or experience to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required; training renewals as mandated.
• Additional training may be required for ASD-related assignments.
• Background checks required: FBI, State Police, CPS, and TB testing.

Responsibilities

• Assists special education teachers with classroom duties: recording grades, preparing instructional materials, and administering accommodations.
• Supports students during instructional activities (one-on-one, small groups, or whole class) as directed.
• Documents student progress as directed by the teacher.
• Assists students onto/off buses and supervises during lunch and recess per IEP.
• Implements classroom accommodations in the student’s IEP as directed.
• Performs clerical tasks: typing, filing, maintaining records, ordering supplies.
