Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of trading experience with at least 5 years in iron ore sales to China.
  • Well-established supplier and buyer networks; ability to generate independent deal flow.
  • Deep understanding of iron ore types, pricing mechanisms, and value chain dynamics.
  • Knowledge of international trading practices, L/C, trade finance, and compliance.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and negotiatio n skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end trading of iron ore products into China, including physical and derivatives.
  • Develop and execute trading strategies across physical and paper markets to optimize margins.
  • Manage relationships with Chinese steel mills, traders, and end-users.
  • Originate new business opportunities and build a sustainable trading book.
  • Utilize DEC and SGX swaps for pricing, hedging, and risk management.
  • Monitor market trends, pricing benchmarks, freight dynamics, and macro factors.
  • Coordinate with risk, logistics, and finance teams to ensure smooth transactions.
  • Draft contracts and collaborate with Legal and Compliance on commercial terms.
  • Engage in domestic and international visits for negotiations and business development.

Job description

The incumbent will be responsible for developing Iron Ore Trade, both physical and derivatives trading activities focused on the China market. The role requires deep expertise in iron ore products, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to independently originate and execute profitable trading strategies.

Key Responsibilities
Trading & Business Development
  • Lead end-to-end trading of iron ore products (Fines, Lumps, Pellets, Concentrates) into China.
  • Develop and execute trading strategies across physical and paper markets to optimize margins.
  • Manage customer relationships with Chinese steel mills, traders, and end-users.
  • Originate new business opportunities and build a sustainable trading book.
  • Utilize derivatives instruments, including DEC and SGX swaps, for pricing, hedging, and risk management.
  • Monitor global iron ore market trends, pricing benchmarks, freight dynamics, and macroeconomic factors.
  • Ensure accurate contract negotiation, execution, and post-trade logistics coordination.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (risk, logistics, finance) to ensure smooth transaction flow.
  • Maintain and expand relationships with suppliers to enable independent deal flow.
  • Draft business proposals and contracts while collaborating with Legal and Compliance teams on commercial terms.
  • Work closely with the Trade Operations Team on daily operational matters such as LC, LOI, shipping, and logistics.
  • Conduct domestic and international visits for business discussions and negotiations.
  • Identify and develop new customers and suppliers while maintaining existing relationships.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Market Risk and Credit, to adhere to internal control requirements.
Market Intelligence & Analysis
  • Research and analyse industry developments, supply-demand dynamics, and pricing trends using various sources.
  • Provide regular market reports and insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Create business and financial reports as required.
  • Understand and apply accounting principles relevant to transactions.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, trade regulations, and international compliance requirements.
  • Operate within designated business frameworks and assigned trading limits.
  • Prepare and maintain supporting documents for internal control and audit purposes.
  • Coordinate with Legal and Compliance teams for counterparty registration (KYC, AML, etc.).
  • Prepare and manage Security Trade Control documentation to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Accounting for accurate accounting treatments.
Requirements
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of trading experience out of which minimum 5 years in Iron Ore trade specializing in sales into China. Understand the quality requirements of Fines, Lumps, Pellets, Concentrates of various origins coming into China
  • Industry Network: Well-established relationships with suppliers and buyers in various global markets. Relationship with supplier which can create independent business is a big plus.
  • Market Knowledge: Strong understanding of iron ore commodities, value chain, and pricing mechanisms.
  • Trade Operations: In-depth knowledge of international trading practices, L/C, trade finance, security trade control, and compliance.
  • Analytical & Strategic Thinking: Ability to assess market conditions, analyse data, and make informed trading decisions.
  • Financial Acumen: Familiarity with paper markets, hedging strategies, and book position management. Understands how to use DEC and SGX swaps for hedging or price calculations.
  • Negotiation & Relationship Management: Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills to secure competitive deals.
  • Language Skills: Fluent in Mandarin and has a good speaking/writing skill in English
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in managing physical and futures markets.
  • Knowledge of macroeconomic, cultural, and political factors impacting the global iron ore market.
