Job summary

Maersk is seeking a Stowage Planner in Singapore to design safe, efficient vessel stowage plans and coordinate with terminals, operations and ship commands. You will ensure ballast safety, weight distribution and crane productivity while supporting the end-to-end planning process.

The role requires strong analytical skills, a background in stowage planning or related sea-going experience, and a collaborative mindset to share knowledge and improve processes.

Responsibilities

• Develop safe and efficient vessel stowage plans, ensuring proper segregation of dangerous goods, and meeting stability and structural requirements.
• Independently manage stowage planning across trade lanes, vessel segments and cargo profiles.
• Maintain high planning standards to maximise vessel utilisation while ensuring safety and minimising costs.
• Manage end-to-end stowage planning and coordinate with stakeholders per vessel schedules and requirements.
• Evaluate vessel suitability and propose alternatives when deployment plans are not operationally suitable.
• Identify operational risks, communicate impacts, and drive actions to prevent disruption.
• Collaborate with terminals, operations, ship commands, Nautical, Network and Deployment teams.
• Provide operational recommendations and support decision-making in complex situations.
• Review and enhance SOPs and contribute to productivity, processes and cost efficiency.
• Participate in team rotations to strengthen cross-functional expertise and support business continuity.
• Support onboarding and development of new planners with knowledge sharing.

Key responsibilities

• Develop safe and efficient vessel stowage plans, ensuring dangerous goods are properly segregated, stability and structural stress requirements are met, weight is evenly distributed, and bays support maximum crane productivity.


• Independently manage stowage planning activities across different trade lanes, vessel segments and cargo profiles.


• Maintain high planning standards to maximise vessel utilisation while ensuring safety and minimising operational costs.


• Manage the end-to-end stowage planning process and coordinate with stakeholders according to vessel schedules and operational requirements.


• Evaluate vessel suitability based on trade requirements and vessel characteristics, recommending alternatives where deployment plans are not operationally suitable.


• Identify operational risks or constraints, communicate their impact and drive actions to prevent or mitigate disruption.


• Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including terminals, regional operations, ship commands, Nautical, Network and Deployment teams.


• Provide operational recommendations and support decision‑making, particularly in complex or time‑sensitive situations.


• Review and enhance standard operating procedures and contribute to initiatives that improve productivity, processes, utilisation and cost efficiency.


• Participate in team rotations to strengthen cross‑functional expertise and support business continuity.


• Support the onboarding and development of new planners by sharing technical knowledge and practical guidance.

We’re looking for

• For candidates with a stowage planning background, around five years or more of relevant experience is preferred, together with the ability to manage vessel and cargo‑planning requirements independently.


• Candidates with relevant sea‑going deck experience and a strong understanding of vessel operations, safety, stability and cargo considerations are also encouraged to apply, even without direct shore‑based stowage planning experience.


• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and make sound decisions under pressure.


• Good understanding of vessel operations, stability, structural limitations, dangerous‑goods segregation and terminal considerations.


• Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills, with the confidence to coordinate across diverse functions and cultures.


• Ability to contribute to or lead operational improvement initiatives.


• A collaborative mindset and willingness to guide and share knowledge with other planners.


• Strong organisational skills, adaptability and resilience in a fast‑paced operational environment.

This role generally follows non‑standard working hours, with rotational night‑shift duties approximately once every six weeks, when required, to support key vessel berthing windows.

Candidates should be self‑driven, accountable and comfortable taking ownership. The role also requires agility in learning new technologies and operating systems. Comprehensive training will be provided, and successful candidates must complete the Basic Theory and Basic Stowage Proficiency Assessments.
