Job summary

NordAxon is seeking a Senior Data Engineer – AI & Machine Learning to design and build scalable data architectures, pipelines and platforms that enable production AI solutions.

You will work closely with AI/ML engineers, data scientists and software engineers to ingest, transform and store data, support end-to-end ML workflows, and deploy data foundations for Generative AI, LLMs and analytics across client projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable data architectures and production-grade data pipelines for AI/ML applications
• Build robust ETL/ELT processes for structured, semi-structured and unstructured data
• Design and implement modern data lake, lakehouse and data warehouse architectures
• Integrate data from APIs, databases, enterprise systems, files, streaming sources and external platforms
• Prepare and transform data for Machine Learning, predictive analytics and Generative AI applications
• Create ingestion and processing pipelines for LLMs, vector databases and AI Agents
• Work with both batch and real-time/streaming data
• Ensure data quality, reliability, observability and maintainability
• Design and implement scalable cloud-based data solutions

This is not a traditional Data Engineering role focused solely on moving data between systems. You will work closely with AI/ML Engineers, Data Scientists and Software Engineers to build the complete data foundation behind solutions involving Machine Learning, Generative AI, LLMs, AI Agents, Computer Vision, predictive analytics and other data-driven applications.

About the Role

As a Senior Data Engineer – AI & Machine Learning, you will work at the intersection of Data Engineering, AI/ML Engineering and Software Engineering.

Your primary responsibility will be designing and building scalable data architectures, pipelines and platforms that enable AI and Machine Learning solutions to operate reliably in production.

You will work directly with customers and alongside our AI/ML Engineers throughout the complete solution lifecycle – from understanding available data and designing the architecture to building pipelines, integrating ML models and deploying production systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and developing scalable data architectures and production-grade data pipelines for AI/ML applications
• Building robust ETL/ELT processes for structured, semi-structured and unstructured data
• Designing and implementing modern data lake, lakehouse and data warehouse architectures
• Integrating data from APIs, databases, enterprise systems, files, streaming sources and external platforms
• Preparing and transforming data for Machine Learning, predictive analytics and Generative AI applications
• Building ingestion and processing pipelines for LLMs, RAG systems, vector databases and AI Agents
• Working with both batch and real-time/streaming data
• Ensuring data quality, reliability, observability and maintainability
• Designing and implementing scalable cloud-based data solutions
• Supporting the deployment and operation of AI/ML solutions using modern DataOps, DevOps and MLOps practices
• Working directly with customers to translate business and AI requirements into robust technical solutions
• Contributing to architecture decisions, technical standards and NordAxon’s evolving AI capabilities

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer who wants to work close to AI and Machine Learning. You are comfortable taking responsibility for the data foundation of a solution – from ingestion and transformation to storage, orchestration and production – while understanding how that data will ultimately be used by AI/ML applications.

You combine strong Data Engineering and Software Engineering skills with practical knowledge of modern AI/ML systems. You do not need to be an ML researcher, but you should understand the Machine Learning lifecycle and be comfortable collaborating closely with AI/ML Engineers and Data Scientists.

We expect you to have:

• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience within Data Engineering, Software Engineering, AI/ML Engineering or a closely related field
• Strong programming skills in Python and strong proficiency in SQL
• Proven experience designing and building production-grade data pipelines, data platforms and ETL/ELT workflows
• Solid understanding of data modelling, data architecture, data quality and reliable data processing
• Experience with relational and non-relational databases and integrating data from APIs and enterprise systems
• Experience with cloud-based data platforms on Azure, AWS or Google Cloud
• Experience with modern data technologies such as Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Apache Spark/PySpark or similar
• Experience with orchestration technologies such as Airflow, Azure Data Factory, Databricks Workflows, Dagster or similar
• Experience working with data lakes, lakehouses and/or data warehouses
• Experience with modern Software Engineering practices including Git, Docker and CI/CD
• Practical understanding of Machine Learning and the ML lifecycle, including how data is prepared and used for model training and inference
• Experience contributing to data pipelines or platforms used by AI/ML applications in production
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills in English and fundamental in Swedish

Because we are an AI-specialised company, we also value hands-on experience with technologies and architectures used in modern AI solutions. Experience with LLMs and Generative AI, RAG pipelines, embeddings, vector databases, MLflow, MLOps, model deployment and monitoring, or ML frameworks such as Scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow is highly relevant.

Experience with Kafka or other streaming technologies, dbt, Kubernetes, Azure AI Services/Azure OpenAI, LangChain, LlamaIndex, data governance and lineage, or data pipelines for Computer Vision and Time Series applications is considered an advantage.
