Job summary

Telia is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate cloud-native backend services powering Telia Play. You will shape architectures, implement secure REST APIs, and own production operations on AWS with Kubernetes, Helm, and Docker.

We value strong Java/Spring Boot expertise, distributed-systems knowledge, and collaboration. You’ll join a Nordic team focusing on scalable onboarding, purchases, subscriptions, and content-access journeys, with opportunities for remote work.

Qualifications

• Five+ years backend development experience with modern Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience building cloud-native apps on AWS with Kubernetes and Docker.
• Strong understanding of microservices, REST APIs, and service integration.

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join us at Telia and help build Telia Play.

I’m Mindaugas Jaras, Head of Tech for Sales and Onboarding, and I’m searching for someone ready to grow with us. We’re a supportive, forward-thinking team building reliable customer onboarding, purchasing, subscription, and content-access journeys for Telia Play.

What you'll do

You will design, build, and operate cloud-native backend services that power critical Telia Play product journeys.

• Design and build scalable backend services. Develop, improve, and maintain Java and Spring Boot microservices supporting onboarding, purchases, subscriptions, content access, and other core capabilities.
• Shape architecture and integrations. Design resilient and secure distributed solutions, REST APIs, and integrations, while contributing to architectural decisions and engineering standards.
• Build and operate cloud-native solutions. Deploy and run services on AWS using technologies such as EKS, ECS, EC2, S3, Lambda, and RDS, together with Kubernetes, Helm, and Docker.
• Drive engineering excellence and delivery. Collaborate across the product organization, promote clean and testable code, improve CI/CD and observability, support less-experienced engineers, and take ownership through production operation.

What will help you to thrive in this role

You combine strong backend engineering expertise with clear technical reasoning, collaboration, and end-to-end ownership.

• Proven backend development experience. At least five years of professional experience, primarily with modern Java, ideally Java 21 or later, and strong hands-on knowledge of Spring Boot, Spring Security, REST APIs, data access, and service integration.
• Strong cloud-native engineering skills. Practical experience building and operating solutions in AWS, using Docker, Kubernetes, ideally Amazon EKS, and Helm.
• Solid distributed-systems knowledge. A good understanding of microservices, event-driven integration patterns, software security, automated testing, observability, reliability, and performance.
• Delivery and collaboration mindset. Experience with CI/CD pipelines, preferably GitHub Actions, and the ability to analyse complex technical problems, communicate your reasoning clearly, and own solutions from design to production.

Experience that would be an advantage

It would be beneficial if you have experience in one or more of these areas:

• Platform and integration technologies: GraphQL, Kafka or other event-streaming technologies, Terraform or AWS CloudFormation, OpenSearch, and Istio or another service mesh.
• Observability and resilience: Prometheus and Grafana, high-availability or high-traffic consumer platforms, disaster recovery, backup and failover, business continuity, and defining or validating RTO and RPO.
• Cloud and software security: Secure development, threat modelling, vulnerability management, security testing, IAM, least-privilege access, secrets management, encryption, network security, monitoring, and incident response.
• AI-enabled backend development: Large language models or practical AI integrations. AI experience is not required, but curiosity about responsible AI-assisted capabilities is welcome.
