Responsibilities
  • Adhere to, reinforce, and promote IMI Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policies.
  • Attend daily departmental meetings to update the Structural Manager on project progress and any serious matters regarding equipment, tools, consumables, and resource shortages that may prevent the onboard structural team from meeting deadlines; receive and follow instructions from the Structural Manager regarding project priority and allocate the workshop workforce accordingly.
  • Hold daily meetings with structural superintendents and supervisors to ensure manpower works on the right priorities, monitor physical progress, and provide technical guidance as needed.
  • Develop comprehensive execution/repair plans, including detailed schedules and resource allocation.
  • Provide sound knowledge on various types of steel fabrication and repair work onboard vessels.
  • Ensure all repair and maintenance work is carried out in accordance with approved procedures and project specifications, meeting required quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and manage onboard superintendents, supervisors, foremen, charge-hands, tradesmen, and subcontractors to meet project deadlines.
  • Coordinate with Procurement/Supply Chain to ensure materials and equipment are procured and delivered in line with production and project contract requirements.
  • Maintain effective and consistent interaction with other production superintendents as required.
  • Monitor actual man-hours against budgeted hours and take corrective action to address overruns; manage overtime to contribute to project profitability.
  • Liaise with the engineering department regarding mechanical activities and coordinate with other trades to ensure schedule adherence.
  • Ensure onboard supervisors record correct hours/timesheets for project orders and job numbers for cost capture and cost control; check and monitor material waste.
  • Provide feedback for bid preparations, feasibility studies, tendering, and/or change of scope.
  • Ensure availability and serviceability of structural equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition and properly calibrated within expiry dates.
  • Facilitate training and development of workshop personnel and conduct trade tests when necessary.
  • Be accountable for delivery of all Inspection Test Records (ITRs) under the relevant discipline by effectively delegating them to the team.
  • Visit project work onboard vessels, in the workshop, or other fabrication/repair areas to check progress, provide technical advice, and ensure safety, environmental measures, and housekeeping controls are in place.
  • Prepare individual appraisals for subordinate staff and workforce and identify training requirements.
  • Assist the Structural Manager in preparing departmental annual budgets, productivity norms, and manpower planning for continual productivity improvement.
  • Ensure a high standard of order and cleanliness throughout workshop areas.
  • Perform other relevant tasks as requested by line management.
