Job summary

The Cytology Laboratory Unit at KFSH&RC in Riyadh seeks a Cytotechnologist to perform and evaluate cytochemical, microscopic, and immunological procedures in the Anatomic Pathology section to support accurate diagnoses.

Responsibilities include preparing slides, assessing cellular adequacy for FNA procedures, maintaining CAP/CLIA compliant quality controls, and training junior staff while participating in continuous education and quality improvement activities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology is required.
  • Two years Cytology experience for Grade 09 or four years with a Bachelor's for Grade 09.
  • Registration with SCHS and cytotechnologist certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs cytochemical, microscopic, and immunological procedures in Anatomic Pathology.
  • Prepares slides, stains, and mounts specimens for diagnosis.
  • Assesses cellular adequacy for FNA procedures and reports abnormalities.

Summary

Performs and evaluates a variety of Cytochemical, Microscopic, Immunological, procedures/testing in the Anatomic Pathology section to obtain accurate data for diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1. Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of scrapings, or other exudates and fixes them. Stains and mounts slides to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under the microscope.

2. Studies under the microscope cells of human body to detect evidence of cellular abnormalities including hormonal abnormalities and other pathological conditions according to established standards and practices. Reports abnormalities to the pathologist.

3. Assists in FNA procedures by evaluating the cellular adequacy of specimens obtained from patients including those obtained in Endoscopy or under radiological guidance (ultrasound and CT).

4. Adheres to College of American Pathologists (CAP) standard CYP.08300 to meet CLIA requirement of total number of slides examined or reviewed in all laboratories during a twenty four (24) hour period.

5. Ensures that optimum levels of supplies are available to provide uninterrupted services; maintains an ordering and supply inventory system.

6. Assists in development of new methodologies and the evaluation of new equipment. Updates policy and procedure manuals in accordance with specified guidelines.

7. Maintains quality control of the subsection. Participates in the Quality Assurance programs of the section. Investigates incident reports and implements associated corrective action. Participates and contributes to quality improvement activities.

8. Assists section supervisor in ongoing employee performance appraisal. Counsels subordinates to improve performance. Orients, trains, provides continuing education, and guides lower grade personnel, other laboratory and healthcare personnel, students and residents.

Education

Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology is required.

Experience Required

Grade 09:

Two (2) years of experience in Cytology with Master’s or four (4) years with Bachelor’s Degree is required.

Grade 10:

Four (4) years as Senior Cytotechnologist at KFSH&RC, or (Grade 09) related experience is required. Average of annual performance appraisal at least (3.5) for the last four (4) years. One hundred (100) hours of cumulative continued medical education [CME].

Other Requirements(Certificates)
  • Current Registration from country of origin and Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS) is required.
  • Registration as Cytotechnologist with Certification by Internationally recognized body as CT(ASCP) or CT( IAC), AIMLS, FILMS, AIMS, NZIMLT, or equivalent in country of origin is required
