Role Context
The Design Manager - Power Infrastructure will support the technical and programme coordination of localized electrical distribution systems within a wider utility masterplan. The position will assess network layouts, substation locations, cable routing, construction phasing, and contractor interfaces to ensure that power packages remain aligned with development priorities. The role contributes directly to constructability, programme certainty, cost visibility, and site readiness. By identifying scheduling gaps, spatial conflicts, and execution deviations early, the Design Manager will help reduce rework, support Stage Gate approvals, and improve coordination between designers, contractors, utility authorities, and other infrastructure disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the assessment of proposed localized power distribution networks.
- Review substation layouts against development plans, construction sequences, and delivery milestones.
- Assist in planning construction sequencing for medium-voltage power infrastructure.
- Coordinate with contractors to optimize cable routes, equipment locations, access requirements, and installation paths.
- Review layouts for medium-voltage cabling, switchgear, ring main units, and associated substation components.
- Identify spatial constraints, interface conflicts, and constructability concerns affecting power infrastructure.
- Contribute scheduling information for individual power project packages.
- Track programme adjustments, revised milestones, and dependencies across electrical utility works.
- Support alignment between localized power packages and the wider utility masterplan.
- Maintain detailed programme trackers for design, procurement, construction, and interface activities.
- Identify timeline gaps, sequencing risks, and potential delays.
- Coordinate with relevant teams to develop practical recovery or mitigation measures.
- Provide technical information and performance metrics for early-stage cost estimates.
- Support budget monitoring through accurate design, quantity, programme, and progress inputs.
- Contribute data to project dashboards and management reporting tools.
- Track site execution progress against approved drawings, schedules, and planned phasing.
- Report physical alignment deviations, installation conflicts, and progress concerns to the Senior Manager.
- Coordinate design and construction information between electrical, civil, roads, utilities, and development teams.
- Support the resolution of field coordination issues affecting power network delivery.
- Prepare technical checklists and supporting documentation for Stage Gate reviews.
- Maintain local distribution phasing schedules.
- Develop and update subcontractor coordination trackers.
- Manage interface logs covering utility clearances, spatial constraints, and cross-discipline dependencies.
- Confirm that relevant municipal guidelines, utility standards, and integration requirements are considered.
- Support reviews of contractor submissions, layouts, schedules, and technical coordination records.
- Use GIS and Primavera data to improve spatial and programme coordination.
- Assist with technical meetings, planning reviews, and contractor coordination workshops.
- Maintain clear records of decisions, risks, actions, and design changes.
- Perform other responsibilities associated with power infrastructure design and delivery coordination.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree in electrical engineering, construction management, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Electrical engineering qualification is strongly preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in power utility delivery systems.
- Strong background in localized power distribution infrastructure.
- Experience with medium-voltage distribution cabling and associated network equipment.
- Practical knowledge of substations, switchgear, ring main units, and electrical utility interfaces.
- Experience supporting power infrastructure design and construction planning.
- Ability to assess distribution layouts, cable routing, equipment locations, and construction sequencing.
- Familiarity with municipal design requirements and utility integration codes.
- Experience coordinating electrical utility works with roads, civil infrastructure, and other services.
- Understanding of spatial planning, utility clearances, and interface management.
- Ability to identify design clashes, programme gaps, and construction constraints.
- Experience monitoring contractors and reporting site progress.
- Competence in preparing technical checklists, trackers, schedules, and approval documentation.
- Working knowledge of GIS platforms.
- Proficiency in Primavera or comparable scheduling software.
- Strong analytical, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, schedules, and technical documentation.
