Job summary

Hiscox in Lisbon/Portugal is seeking a motivated software engineer to join the London Market Engineering Team. You will contribute to cloud-first solutions, modern SDLC practices, and AI-assisted development while collaborating with squads across the UK, Portugal, Poland, and India.

Expect to write clean C#/.NET, create unit tests, and participate in CI/CD with Azure services. The role emphasizes learning, security standards, and delivering high-quality code in a hybrid setup.

Qualifications

• Academic degree in closely related field or 3+ years in Software Engineering.
• Strong foundation in C# and .NET with ability to write unit tests.
• Solid SQL background and relational databases knowledge.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and source control strategies.
• Azure technologies knowledge (Functions, SQL, Storage, APIM) advantageous.
• Azure Service Bus knowledge advantageous, especially in event-driven architectures.
• Familiarity with Blazor/Angular/React frontend technologies.

• Write clean, maintainable code following SOLID, design patterns, unit tests, peer reviews, and CI/CD.

The role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic professional who will be a key and influential member of our Hiscox London Market Engineering Team, within the Software Engineering Chapter. In this role you will be working in one of our various squads as we create new “Cloud First” solutions to add value to the business, while supporting and transforming our existing on-prem and cloud systems. We are looking for someone who is aligned with modern software engineering practices and ready to embrace the use of AI enabled development tool and adapt to the ever changing space as we enter the agentic SDLC phase to allow rapid delivery of high quality value.

Key Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with your squad and stakeholders to contribute to delivering business outcomes
• Write clean, maintainable code following best practices such as SOLID principles, design patterns, unit testing, peer review, and CI/CD processes
• Ensure documentation are up to date and detailed comments added to the stories
• Support team members by learning from others and sharing knowledge as you grow in your role
• Assist in designing solutions and implementing changes based on requirements
• Collaborate with engineers across teams to learn about and contribute to our architecture
• Ensure your work follows security and engineering standards with support from the team
• Be open to learning and adopting new ways of working, including AI-assisted development tools and ever changing space as we enter agentic SDLC phase
• Work collaboratively with team members located in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India to deliver value

Skills

• Academic degree in a closely related field (or 3+ years employment in a Software Engineering role)
• Candidates should have a strong foundation and hands‑on experience in C# and .NET, with the ability to write and maintain effective unit tests.
• Should have a solid background in SQL and be comfortable working with relational databases
• Should have knowledge on CI/CD pipelines and a good understanding of source control systems and branching strategies
• Exposure to Azure technologies such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, and Azure API Management (APIM) would be considered an advantage
• Knowledge on Azure Service Bus would be advantageous, particularly in event‑driven or messaging‑based architectures.
• Familiarity with modern front‑end technologies such as Blazor/Angular/React would be beneficial for building responsive and user‑friendly applications.
