Job summary

VisionSpace is seeking a Junior Software Developer (C) to join our onboard software team in Portugal. You will help develop low-level C software for aerospace applications, working within a tightly specified client tech stack while contributing ideas for architecture and performance.

You will collaborate with senior engineers, participate in Agile sprints, and ensure code quality through strict coding standards and tests.

Qualifications

• A university degree in CS, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
• 2+ years of professional or project-based C programming experience.
• Strong grasp of C fundamentals, pointers, memory management, and low-level concepts.
• Experience with Git for version control and code reviews.
• Proficient English, written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain high-quality C software for flight and onboard systems.
• Follow strict C coding standards for safety-critical, resource-efficient code.
• Collaborate with team during code reviews and use Git for version control.
• Debug, profile, and optimise low-level software under memory constraints.
• Assist in requirements analysis, design and documentation with senior engineers.

We are looking for a Junior Software Developer (C) to join our onboard software team. In this role, you will help develop low-level core software for aerospace applications. You will work within a tightly specified client tech stack while actively contributing fresh ideas for software architecture, performance optimisation, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain high-quality C software for flight software and onboard systems.
• Follow strict C coding standards and best practices to ensure maintainable, safety-critical, and resource-efficient code.
• Work with Git for version control and collaborate closely with team members during code reviews.
• Debug, profile, and optimise low-level software to improve performance and reliability under tight memory and computational constraints.
• Assist in requirement analysis, technical design, and documentation under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Participate in agile development activities, including sprint planning and daily stand-ups.

What We Look For

• A university degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 2+ years of professional or strong project-based experience with C programming.
• Strong knowledge of C fundamentals, pointer manipulation, manual memory management, and low-level system concepts.
• Practical experience with Git for version control.
• Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills for embedded or system-level environments.
• High attention to detail and a proactive willingness to learn and suggest improvements.
• Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience or academic background in space-related projects, particularly ESA missions, or familiarity with ECSS software development standards.
• Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) or bare-metal development.
• Basic scripting experience in Python or Bash for testing and automation.
• Familiarity with Docker and containerized development environments.
• Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and static analysis tools.
• Experience working with software requirement specifications and technical documentation.
