Job summary

SWORD Portugal is seeking a Senior UX/UI Designer with strong design systems expertise and hands-on front-end skills to join an international digital innovation project. The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer with strong Design Systems expertise and hands-on front-end development skills to join an international digital innovation project.

You will contribute to the design and evolution of a collaborative digital ecosystem, including an AI-enabled marketplace that helps a global community discover, evaluate and share analytical tools, datasets and digital resources.

This position goes beyond traditional UX/UI design.

We are looking for someone who can combine user-centred design, advanced Figma expertise and practical front-end engineering knowledge to create scalable, accessible and production-ready design systems.

You will collaborate closely with Business Analysts, developers, product stakeholders and international users, helping bridge the gap between design and implementation.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead UX/UI design activities for complex digital products and platforms.
• Define, build and evolve scalable design systems and visual design standards.
• Create and maintain Figma component libraries, variables, auto-layout structures and reusable design patterns.
• Work hands-on with React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and Storybook to support coded component libraries.
• Define design tokens, component states, interaction patterns and responsive design specifications.
• Ensure consistency between Figma design libraries and production front-end components.
• Conduct user research, stakeholder workshops, usability testing and requirements gathering.
• Translate user needs into information architecture, user journeys, wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes.
• Design intuitive interfaces for search, discovery, comparison and sharing of digital resources.
• Contribute to the design of AI-assisted interfaces and user interactions.
• Apply accessibility standards, including WCAG, across digital experiences.
• Collaborate with developers on implementation, documentation, component versioning and design system governance.

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of experience in UX/UI Design, Product Design, Interaction Design or similar roles.
• Demonstrated experience building, maintaining and governing design systems used in production.
• Advanced proficiency in Figma, including components, variables, auto-layout and design libraries.
• Hands-on front-end development skills using React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and Storybook.
• Experience with Git-based workflows and collaboration with software engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of design tokens, component architecture, reusable UI patterns and responsive design.
• Experience conducting user research, usability testing and design validation.
• Knowledge of WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating both visual design quality and technical implementation.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Fluent English, written and spoken.

Nice to Have

• Experience designing marketplaces, repositories, data catalogs or knowledge-sharing platforms.
• Experience designing AI-assisted search, discovery or recommendation interfaces.
• Background in international digital products with geographically distributed users.
• Experience with multilingual platforms and diverse accessibility requirements.
• Familiarity with open-source design systems and component libraries.
