Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Data Centres

Location: Porto, Portugal

Duration of Contract: 12 Month Contract

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering team delivering major data centre and mission-critical projects across Portugal and wider Europe.

This is a senior technical position for an experienced mechanical engineer who can take ownership of mechanical building services design from initial concept through detailed design, tender and project handover.

You will work alongside experienced multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex, high-value data centre developments, while acting as a key technical point of contact for clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.

The role would suit an engineer coming from a data centre, high-tech, industrial, healthcare or large-scale commercial building services background, with strong mechanical design capability and an interest in developing further within the rapidly expanding European data centre sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical services design of major data centre projects from concept through to completion and handover.
• Develop mechanical building services strategies and detailed designs in line with project requirements, client briefs and applicable standards.
• Take responsibility for the technical delivery of mechanical design packages, ensuring designs are technically robust, coordinated and buildable.
• Design and specify HVAC and associated mechanical building services systems for complex mission-critical environments.
• Develop design calculations, technical specifications, equipment schedules, drawings and other engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate mechanical designs with electrical, CSA, architectural, structural and specialist engineering disciplines.
• Review and coordinate BIM/Revit models and design information to ensure multidisciplinary interfaces are properly resolved.
• Prepare and review tender documentation, including detailed technical packages, specifications, tender reports, analysis and recommendations.
• Participate in design reviews, technical workshops and client meetings, providing clear engineering advice and recommendations.
• Work closely with clients to understand project requirements, develop scopes and translate operational requirements into practical engineering solutions.
• Carry out ongoing design quality assurance and quality control, ensuring deliverables meet project and organisational standards.
• Support technical reviews of installation works and provide engineering input throughout the construction and delivery phases.
• Identify design risks, technical issues and potential improvements and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant CIBSE, ASHRAE, EN and applicable Portuguese/local standards and regulations.
• Manage your own project deliverables, programmes and priorities across multiple workstreams.
• Take ownership of projects with a high degree of autonomy while keeping project leadership informed of progress, risks and key decisions.
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to junior and intermediate mechanical engineers.
• Review engineering deliverables produced by other team members and provide constructive technical feedback.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, engineering standards and technical solutions.
• Support the wider business with technical input into new opportunities, proposals and project development where required.

Mechanical Systems Experience

Candidate Profile

• 6+ years' experience in mechanical building services design.
• Experience working on data centres, high-tech, industrial, healthcare or other technically complex large-scale projects.
• A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
• Strong understanding of mechanical building services design principles.
• Experience taking projects from concept through detailed design and delivery.
• Strong knowledge of relevant engineering standards, ideally including CIBSE, ASHRAE, EN and local Portuguese requirements.
• Experience using Revit and AutoCAD; knowledge of Bluebeam and engineering analysis/design software would be advantageous.
• Strong understanding of BIM and multidisciplinary design coordination.
• Experience preparing and reviewing technical specifications and tender packages.
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Experience leading or coordinating junior/intermediate engineers.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Excellent technical reporting and presentation skills.
• A proactive approach to problem solving and technical design.
• Professional registration/chartership would be advantageous but is not essential.
