A digital bank in Lisbon is seeking a Senior Licensed Accountant to oversee financial and accounting processes. The ideal candidate should possess a Certified Accountant designation, with 3-5 years of experience in the banking sector. Responsibilities include maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial statements in accordance with IFRS, managing local tax filings, and conducting reconciliations. The role also emphasizes professional integrity and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in tax law.

Qualificações

  • Certification is a must - Certified Accountant (Contabilista Certificado) registered with the OCC.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in accounting, ideally within the banking or financial services sector in Portugal.
  • Solid experience in the preparation and analysis of financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
  • High level of integrity, especially regarding sensitive financial information and AML awareness.
  • Ability to keep up with the frequent changes in Portuguese tax law and EU banking directives.
  • Native Portuguese and professional English for international reporting.
  • High integrity with AML awareness.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in Portuguese tax law and EU directives.

Responsabilidades

  • Maintain and oversee the branch’s general ledger, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements in accordance with IFRS and local Portuguese accounting standards.
  • Manage local tax filings, including VAT (IVA) and Corporate Income Tax (IRC).
  • Conduct regular reconciliations of bank accounts and inter-branch transfers.
  • Supervise the invoicing process for bank customers.
  • Coordinate with auditors during annual reviews and provide documentation.
  • Monitor changes in local financial and tax law.
  • Support new banking product implementations ensuring tax compliance.
  • Supervise invoicing for bank customers.

What you will be doing?

We are looking for a Licensed Accountant with a robust technical background and relevant experience in financial accounting and Portuguese taxation to join our office in Lisbon.

We are looking for a professional with strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and a continuous improvement mindset, capable of integrating into a team and contributing to the ongoing enhancement of accounting and financial processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and oversee the branch’s general ledger, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and in real-time.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Balance Sheet, P&L) in accordance with IFRS and local Portuguese accounting standards.
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing procedures, including accruals, prepayments, and depreciation.
  • Manage local tax filings, including VAT (IVA) and Corporate Income Tax (IRC).
  • Conduct regular reconciliations of bank accounts, inter-branch transfers, and suspense accounts.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors during annual reviews, providing all necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Monitor changes in local financial and tax law.
  • Cooperate in the implementation of new banking products to ensure compliance with financial and tax law.
  • Supervise the invoicing process for bank customers.
  • Manage fixed asset registers and ensure correct valuation of collateralized assets where applicable.
Skills you should have
  • Certification is a must - Certified Accountant (Contabilista Certificado) registered with the OCC (Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados).
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in accounting, ideally within the banking or financial services sector in Portugal.
  • Solid experience in the preparation and analysis of financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics.
  • Advanced Excel skills. Precision in handling complex financial data.
  • Native/Fluent Portuguese and Professional Working Proficiency in English (required for international reporting).
  • High level of integrity, especially regarding sensitive financial information and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) awareness.
  • Ability to keep up with the frequent changes in Portuguese tax law and EU banking directives.
