Job summary

Farfetch in Porto, Portugal, seeks a Senior Legal Counsel, Privacy to ensure global data protection compliance. You will work with the legal, business and tech teams to embed privacy in product development, third‑party risk, and data processing activities across the Group.

Design and review privacy frameworks, monitor regulatory changes, draft data protection clauses, and lead privacy by design across major projects. A qualified lawyer with ~8 years PQE and strong English is required.

Qualifications

• Professional experience in data protection law essential.
• Experience in retail, ecommerce or technology sectors preferred.
• Excellent command of English.
• Certifications like CIPP/CIPM are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop comprehensive privacy frameworks aligned with regulations.
• Respond to data protection queries and guide policy requirements across business teams.
• Support the Head of Legal Data Privacy on global compliance projects and initiatives.
• Monitor regulatory landscape and draft/negotiate data protection clauses in commercial agreements.
• Advise on privacy by design for product launches and tech initiatives.
• Assess new projects/providers for privacy compliance with group standards.
• Develop targeted privacy trainings for Marketing, Engineering, People Team and other functions.
• Audit the privacy program and deploy scalable improvements across the organisation.

ROLE

The Senior Legal Counsel, Privacy will work with the wider legal team and Farfetch’s business and tech teams with the aim of ensuring that the Farfetch Group is compliant with applicable privacy standards worldwide. The role will provide advice on all aspects related to data protection compliance, including risk mitigation strategies for a multi-jurisdictional, tech-oriented company.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Design and develop comprehensive privacy frameworks, ensuring alignment with applicable regulations and integration with organizational processes and technologies
• Respond to data protection queries and provide guidance on policy/procedural requirements to business teams across the Group Companies
• Support the Head of Legal Data Privacy as the specialist lead for privacy on the ongoing projects of ensuring Farfetch Group's compliance with global Data Protection Laws and regulations
• Monitor the global regulatory landscape for updates on privacy laws, regulations, guidelines, and court rulings, with a focus on the key business jurisdictions for the Group. Support the drafting, review and negotiations of Data Protection Clauses in an array of commercial agreements, ensuring Farfetch is protected both in the position of controller and as a processor
• Act as an advisor for material business projects, working autonomously to ensure "Privacy by Design" is embedded in new product launches and tech initiatives
• Assist the Head of Legal Data Privacy in assessing new projects and providers regarding compliance with the Group's privacy standards
• Support with continuously improving and deploying targeted, high-impact training sessions for specific business functions (e.g., Marketing, Engineering, People Team) to ensure that Privacy is embedded in the company culture
• Proactively audit the existing privacy program to identify improvement opportunities. Support the Head of Data Privacy Legal in designing and deploying scalable improvements to our data protection program

WHO YOU ARE

• Be a qualified lawyer with ~8 years' PQE (professional experience after internship)
• You possess a well-rounded legal background spanning both top-tier private practice and significant in-house experience
• Have work experience in Data Protection Law, preferably in retail, e-commerce and/or technology sectors
• Solid knowledge and practical experience of EU, UK, and US data protection regulations, as well as familiarity with key regulatory authorities and enforcement bodies, is required
• Have an excellent level of English, both written and spoken
• Certifications (e.g., CIPP, CIPM) and a master’s degree in Privacy, Data Protection, Law, or a related field are considered a plus
