ABOUT DATAMENTORS
Datamentors is a robotics start‑up building an agnostic orchestration platform and a family of proprietary robots — quadruped, mobile upper‑body and humanoid — assembled at our own factory in Caniçal, Madeira. We also develop custom Vision‑Language‑Action (VLA) models that give our robots natural‑language reasoning and autonomy, deployable across sectors from hospitality and healthcare to defence and logistics. With prototypes running and a clear path to 600 units per year, the engineers joining now will shape both the hardware and the intelligence behind Ardia for years to come.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Focus on the spatial perception layer of the platform — the models that give robots a geometric understanding of the world across all robot types and sectors. You build spatial models, segmentation systems and 3D representations that connect scene understanding directly to manipulation planning and navigation.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Build spatial and 3D perception models: reconstruction, depth estimation and scene understanding for real robot environments across sectors
- Develop and adapt segmentation models (SAM and successors) for robot perception under real‑world conditions
- Build 3D representations — point clouds, NeRF/Gaussian splatting, occupancy — connected to manipulation and navigation
- Connect spatial understanding outputs to manipulation planning and mobile navigation stacks
- Own evaluation and benchmarking of spatial perception on real robots across deployment verticals
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 5+ years ML/AI or computer vision with depth in spatial models, segmentation or 3D deep learning
- Strong 3D geometry foundations: projection models, camera calibration and coordinate transforms
- Experience with SAM‑family models and 3D representations — trade‑offs and failure modes, not just API usage
- Strong PyTorch; comfortable with both research‑quality and production‑quality model code
- Experience integrating perception outputs into downstream robot tasks
Nice to have
- NeRF / 3DGS implementation experience beyond library wrappers
- Depth sensor calibration and integration (RealSense, Orbbec, Livox)
