Descrição da oferta de emprego

BASEYARD is building a next-generation industrial ecosystem for defence and dual-use technologies in Portugal. Our mission is to help advanced technology companies industrialise, manufacture, and scale unmanned systems, mission-critical platforms, electronics, and integrated defence technologies.

As an advanced manufacturing and industrialisation hub, BASEYARD supports customers throughout the product lifecycle—from engineering and prototyping to industrialisation, serial production, testing, and global delivery.

We are looking for a practical and hands-on NPI Engineer – Mechatronics to support the industrialisation and introduction of complex electromechanical products into production at our facility in Braga, Portugal.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site engineering position based in Braga, Portugal.

The NPI Engineer – Mechatronics will support New Product Introduction (NPI), industrialisation, prototype and pilot builds, production readiness, and transfer of products into serial production.

The role will focus on mechatronic and electromechanical systems, combining mechanical assemblies, electronics, sensors, actuators, wiring, embedded systems, and integrated subsystems.

Working closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, Supply Chain, and customer technical teams, the NPI Engineer will help transform engineering designs and prototypes into robust, repeatable, testable, and scalable manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities
  • Support NPI projects from technical assessment through prototype, pilot production, and serial production readiness.
  • Review product designs, drawings, BOMs, specifications, assembly requirements, and technical documentation.
  • Assess manufacturability, assembly complexity, production risks, and readiness for industrialisation.
  • Support industrialisation of mechatronic products combining mechanical structures, electronics, sensors, actuators, wiring, motors, controllers, and embedded systems.
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles and propose improvements to simplify assembly, improve reliability, and reduce manufacturing cost.
  • Support Design for Test (DFT) and development of practical production testing methods.
  • Develop and optimise manufacturing processes, assembly sequences, work instructions, routings, and production documentation.
  • Define requirements for tools, jigs, fixtures, test equipment, and assembly aids.
  • Design or support development of simple fixtures, assembly tools, and test rigs.
  • Participate directly in prototype, engineering, pilot, and pre-series builds.
  • Support mechanical and electrical integration of components and subsystems.
  • Troubleshoot assembly, integration, electrical, mechanical, and functional issues during NPI.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and support corrective and preventive actions.
  • Work with Engineering to resolve design issues identified during manufacturing and testing.
  • Support engineering changes and ensure correct implementation in BOMs, documentation, processes, and tooling.
  • Support production-line and workstation design, including tooling, ergonomics, material flow, and equipment requirements.
  • Support cycle-time optimisation, capacity analysis, and manufacturing cost improvement.
  • Work with Supply Chain and Procurement to evaluate components, suppliers, substitutions, and manufacturing risks.
  • Support supplier technical evaluations and production readiness assessments.
  • Work with Quality/QHSE to define inspection points, acceptance criteria, traceability, and production quality controls.
  • Participate in design reviews, NPI reviews, production readiness reviews, and customer technical meetings.
  • Provide technical support to Production during ramp-up and early serial production.
Technical Focus
  • Mechatronic & Electromechanical Systems
  • Embedded Hardware Integration
  • Manufacturing Process Development
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a related field.
  • Practical engineering experience with mechatronic, electromechanical, robotic, automotive, aerospace, industrial, or similar complex products.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical assemblies combined with electronics, sensors, actuators, wiring, and control systems.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, BOMs, technical specifications, and assembly documentation.
  • Experience assembling, integrating, testing, or troubleshooting complex technical products.
  • Understanding of manufacturing, assembly, and DFM/DFA principles.
  • Experience with prototype development, NPI, industrialisation, manufacturing engineering, or production engineering.
  • Ability to systematically identify and investigate technical problems.
  • Practical understanding of tolerances, materials, fasteners, connectors, wiring, sensors, motors, and electromechanical components.
  • Experience with CAD tools and ability to review or modify mechanical designs.
  • Ability to develop clear work instructions and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Hands-on mindset and willingness to work directly with prototypes, tools, equipment, and production teams.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast‑growing environment and work across Engineering and Operations.
  • Good English communication skills are required.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in defence, aerospace, robotics, automotive, electronics, or advanced manufacturing.
  • Experience with UAV, UGV, USV, UUV, autonomous systems, or mobile robotic platforms.
  • Experience integrating mechanical, electrical, electronic, and embedded systems.
  • Experience with motors, actuators, batteries, power electronics, sensors, cameras, communications, or navigation systems.

  • Experience with ISO 9001, AS9100, AQAP, or similar quality systems.
What Success Looks Like
  • New products transition efficiently from engineering and prototype stages into repeatable production.
  • Product designs are improved for manufacturability, assembly, and testing.
  • Prototype and pilot builds identify technical and manufacturing risks before serial production.
  • Manufacturing processes, tooling, documentation, and test methods are established before production ramp-up.
  • Mechanical, electrical, and integration issues are identified and resolved efficiently.
  • Engineering changes are implemented in a controlled and traceable manner.
  • Products achieve stable quality, repeatability, and production performance.
What We Offer
  • A key engineering role in building one of Europe’s next-generation defence and dual-use industrial platforms.
  • Opportunity to industrialise advanced unmanned systems, robotics, electronics, and mechatronic technologies.
  • Hands‑on involvement from prototype through pilot and serial production.
  • High level of ownership and technical responsibility.
