The opportunity
As part of our expansion, we are recruiting a new job role for an experienced Financial Controller.
This role is to lead and professionalise the finance function of our combined Portuguese operation following the merger of a project and service business with a manufacturing site. Reporting functionally to the Regional Finance Director and working closely with the local Managing Directors, you will combine hands‑on financial control with commercial business partnering and support the business through an important period of integration and systems development.
What you will do
- Lead weekly and monthly financial reporting, including the profit and loss account, balance sheet, KPIs and clear performance commentary.
- Own the budget, rolling forecast and month‑end close processes, ensuring accurate cut‑off, reconciliations and an audit‑ready closing file.
- Provide decision‑useful analysis of revenue, gross margin, project profitability, production variances, labour, materials, transport and fixed overheads.
- Maintain project‑level financial control over costs, billing, forecast‑to‑complete, expected margins, work in progress and revenue recognition.
- Lead finance input into the implementation of the production software, including costing methods, bills of materials, routings, work orders, overhead absorption and production variances.
- Strengthen inventory governance through monthly reconciliations, cycle counts, annual stock counts and slow‑moving or obsolete stock reviews.
- Drive working‑capital improvement across receivables, payables, inventory, project billing and cash‑flow forecasting.
- Oversee key finance controls covering journals, banking, payments, payroll, master data, fixed assets, Capex and system access, with appropriate segregation of duties.
- Coordinate with the external accountant on VAT, corporate tax, statutory accounts and audit requirements, while retaining strong internal review.
- Act as a trusted and constructive business partner to the Managing Directors and operational teams, supporting profitability, productivity and change following the merger.
What we are looking for
- At least five years of experience in financial controlling or a similar finance role, ideally in manufacturing, industrial, construction or project‑based activities.
- Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting, month‑end close, balance‑sheet reconciliations and business performance analysis.
- Solid understanding of cost accounting, including standard and actual costing, work in progress, inventory valuation, overhead absorption and production variances.
- Experience in project accounting, margin forecasting or revenue‑recognition controls is a strong advantage.
- Experience with ERP or finance‑system implementation, process design, testing and go‑live support. Primavera experience is advantageous.
- Advanced Excel skills and the ability to turn financial and operational data into clear, decision‑ready insight.
- Fluent Portuguese and strong written and spoken English.
The person
- Hands‑on, resilient and comfortable leading change in a demanding environment.
- Highly organised, accurate and able to manage deadlines without compromising control quality.
- Commercially minded, collaborative and confident in challenging constructively at all levels.
- Committed to ethical standards, transparency and strong financial‑control discipline.
This is an opportunity to shape the finance function of a newly combined operation, strengthen project and manufacturing insight, support the implementation of new production systems and work directly with local and regional leadership within a listed international Group.
Reporting and support
- Reports functionally to the Regional Finance Director, with a dotted‑line relationship to the local Managing Directors.
- Supported by an external accountant for VAT, corporate income tax, statutory accounts, external filings and external‑audit support.
