The Role
As part of our strategic growth, we are seeking an Automation Engineer to work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team. The engineer will develop design solutions for water and wastewater infrastructure projects from concept through to construction and commissioning.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team in the delivery of one or more projects at any one time, embracing a “one team” culture.
- Ensure Health, Safety, Environmental & Sustainability standards, policies, and procedures are always adhered to on‑site.
- Use the HSQE management system and procedures in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Perform functional design of PLC architecture, networks and communication interfaces using standard hardware and software components.
- Develop functional and design specification documents from design briefs and control philosophies.
- Build and test PLC code to a high standard based on a functional specification.
- Develop and build HMI platforms to control automated systems.
- Design and develop SCADA applications for whole plants and update existing systems.
- Work alongside a multi‑discipline team of engineers during the project duration.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to project delivery teams during system design, implementation, and testing.
- Present solutions for technical issues arising in control systems.
- Develop documentation and perform FAT and SAT as part of a project sign‑off with the client.
- Plan and implement engineering tasks to meet time, cost and quality targets.
- Apply and develop engineering standards within the Automation Team.
- Work with key suppliers to optimize technology and component selection.
- Diagnose faults in highly automated systems.
- Schedule and prioritise tasks across projects while meeting tight timelines.
- Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, site staff, commercial resources and the general site team.
- Keep up to date with the latest standards and technology through continuous professional development.
- Show eagerness to learn and to mentor junior staff.
- Perform other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the water and wastewater industry.
- Degree or equivalent in Automation Engineering or related field with strong Automation, Control & Instrumentation content.
- Interest in developing a career within an industry‑leading organisation.
- Effective team player with input at project meetings.
- Proficient in programming on Rockwell, Schneider, Mitsubishi or Omron platforms.
- Experience with communication protocols and networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, DeviceNet.
- Experience designing and programming SCADA systems such as Ignition, AVEVA, Iconics or Vijeo Citect.
- Experience commissioning VSDs and instruments and integrating them into control systems.
- Experience delivering on‑site commissioning.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and regulations.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, written, verbal and telephonic communication skills.
- Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Initiative and adaptability during project delivery.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong motivation and communication skills.
- Full driving licence.
