Responsibilities

• Build a solid research team in the fields of biology, ecology, health, genetics, management and conservation of game species.
• Develop and advance research lines for preserving and enhancing game species, notably red partridge, Iberian rabbit and Iberian hare, including:
  • Deepen scientific knowledge of their biology, ecology and population dynamics.
  • Study and optimize integrated monitoring methods: demography and health status.
  • Evaluate the impact of game management on biodiversity.
• Contribute to training researchers and students, especially at postgraduate level, through collaboration in Masters and Doctoral programmes.
• Promote links between researchers, students, technicians and managers of hunting and the environment through residencies, internships, ongoing training, and mixed research teams.
• Develop advanced training courses in related fields.
• Promote dissemination of knowledge and results through seminars, colloquia, social networks, newsletters, books, etc.
• Mobilize national and international partnerships, cooperation networks, projects, and other research initiatives.
• Contribute to the development of scientific research in the Alentejo region by integrating the Chair's team into the Mértola Biological Station.
• Encourage and consolidate the establishment of an integrated monitoring network for game species in sentinel populations to assess population trends, emerging diseases and climate change impacts.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Biological Sciences or related field.
• Scientific and professional curriculum vitae appropriate to the activity.
• Proven ability in wildlife management, veterinary sciences, wildlife genetics (population genetics and genomics, including high‑throughput sequencing), non‑invasive genetic sampling, environmental DNA, bioinformatics, fieldwork for collecting biological samples in mammals, birds and aquatic organisms, and consolidated experience with census methods and demographic model analysis.
• Ability to secure complementary funding by preparing proposals for public or private organisations.
• Ability to contribute to doctoral and master programmes and to train doctoral graduates and researchers.
• Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish and English (spoken and written).

Benefits

• Monthly salary: €3,501.28 (index 195 of the Scientific Research Career).
• Full‑time, 35 hours per week.
• Working locations: BIOPOLIS/CIBIO Biodiversity and Genetic Resources Research Centre, Vairão Campus of the University of Porto, Vila do Conde; Mértola Biological Station, Mértola. Travel may be required.
• Unfixed term contract.
