Job description

Job Title: Crypto AML Transaction Monitoring Quality Control Analyst
Location: Lisbon, Portugal
Job Type: Full-time contract, 6 Months
Position Summary:

The Crypto AML Transaction Monitoring Quality Control Analyst performs independent quality control reviews of AML transaction monitoring alerts, investigations, case narratives, escalations, and SAR recommendations completed by investigators for a cryptocurrency exchange. The QC Analyst evaluates whether investigative steps, blockchain tracing, customer-risk analysis, supporting evidence, documentation, and final dispositions are complete, accurate, well-supported, and aligned with client procedures, regulatory expectations, and quality standards. The role requires strong investigative judgment, attention to detail, ability to identify gaps or inconsistencies in case work, and clear communication of QC findings, coaching themes, and remediation requirements.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Perform independent quality control reviews of AML transaction monitoring alerts and investigations involving cryptocurrency deposits, withdrawals, transfers, fiat funding activity, and customer account behavior.
  • Assess whether investigators completed required review steps, considered relevant KYC/CDD/EDD information, transaction histories, blockchain activity, device and account data, internal records, open-source intelligence, and other available evidence.
  • Validate the accuracy and sufficiency of blockchain tracing, wallet-risk analysis, counterparty assessment, transaction-flow explanations, and reconciliation between on-chain activity and off-chain customer records.
  • Evaluate whether investigators appropriately identified and analyzed digital‑asset money laundering and financial crime typologies, including rapid movement of funds, structuring, layering, chain hopping, mixers or obfuscation services, high‑risk exchanges, scams, fraud, ransomware, darknet markets, mule activity, sanctions exposure, and unusual cross‑border activity.
  • Review the use of blockchain analytics and wallet‑screening tools to confirm that direct and indirect exposure, attribution data, counterparty risk, transaction paths, and supporting tool outputs were accurately interpreted and documented.
  • Determine whether case conclusions properly considered customer risk, stated business purpose, expected activity, source of funds, source of wealth, occupation or industry, geography, and historical transaction patterns.
  • Confirm that alert closures, escalations, enhanced reviews, sanctions or fraud referrals, and SAR recommendations are supported by the facts, consistent with client procedures, and appropriately documented.
  • Review case narratives and SAR narratives for factual accuracy, completeness, clarity, defensibility, linkage to supporting evidence, and alignment with applicable quality standards.
  • Document QC results, identify defects or required rework, communicate findings to investigators or team leads, and verify that remediation is completed before final case approval when required.
  • Maintain complete and accurate QC records, including review checklists, defect coding, rationale for findings, supporting examples, remediation status, and evidence of final quality disposition.
  • Identify recurring investigator errors, emerging typologies, documentation gaps, training needs, process issues, and potential systemic control weaknesses; **escalate** themes to quality leadership and compliance stakeholders.
  • Support calibration sessions, quality trend reporting, investigator feedback loops, and updates to job aids, review procedures, and quality expectations.
  • Meet quality review, productivity, service‑level, and regulatory deadlines while maintaining independence, consistency, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
  • Perform other duties and project assignments as directed.
Required Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in AML transaction monitoring investigations, suspicious activity investigations, quality control, quality assurance, for a financial institution, fintech, payment company, or cryptocurrency exchange.
  • Demonstrated ability to review investigator work product, identify documentation or analytical gaps, validate case decisions, and provide clear, defensible QC feedback.
  • Working knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, FinCEN guidance, OFAC requirements, and risk‑based AML, CDD, EDD, sanctions, SAR, and quality control expectations relevant to digital‑asset businesses.
  • Practical understanding of cryptocurrency transactions, wallets, addresses, transaction hashes, centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, stablecoins, bridges, smart contracts, and common digital‑asset transaction flows sufficient to evaluate investigation quality.
  • Experience reviewing blockchain tracing, wallet‑risk analysis, or investigator use of recognized blockchain analytics and screening platforms.
  • Ability to evaluate transaction graphs, assess direct and indirect exposure, identify unsupported conclusions, and determine whether complex findings are explained clearly and accurately in case documentation.
  • Experience using or reviewing open‑source research, adverse media, public blockchain explorers, internal customer records, and external data sources used to support investigative conclusions.
  • Strong analytical reasoning, attention to detail, consistency in applying review standards, organization, and ability to manage a queue of quality reviews under established deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain QC findings, document defect rationale, and communicate quality trends to investigators, team leads, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams.
Highly Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ year of hands‑on quality control, quality assurance, or second‑line review experience for cryptocurrency investigations, digital‑asset transaction monitoring, or virtual asset service provider compliance operations.
  • 1+ years’ experience with blockchain analytics platforms such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic, or comparable tools. Chainalysis experience is preferred.
  • Experience reviewing investigations involving account takeovers, fraud proceeds, scams, ransomware, sanctions risk, darknet exposure, and other crypto‑enabled financial crime typologies.
  • Experience working in a production‑based quality environment with defined accuracy, defect, productivity, calibration, and service‑level expectations.
  • ACAMS, CFCS, CCI, CCAS, or another relevant AML or cryptocurrency investigations certification.
