Greg O'Hanlon International Ltd is seeking a Field Agronomist to support its commercial production operations in the Odemira region, Portugal. The role is hands-on, requiring regular crop inspection, practical agronomic decisions and strong field presence alongside the Field Supervisor.

The successful candidate will monitor irrigation, fertigation, plant nutrition and health, and will coordinate 10–12 field workers. Berry experience is useful but not essential; travel regionally may be required.

Responsabilidades

Our client is an international agricultural genetics organisation focused on the breeding and development of improved berry varieties. The company develops proprietary plant genetics and works closely with growers, nurseries and production partners worldwide.

The business operates a network of more than 30 research and operational facilities and supports commercial activities in over 40 countries. Its international teams coordinate breeding, research and agronomic programmes across Europe, the Americas and Asia within a business generating approximately €900 million in annual revenue.

Opportunity:

The company is looking to appoint a Field Agronomist to support its commercial production operation in the Odemira region.

Reporting to the senior agronomy lead and working closely with the Field Supervisor, the Field Agronomist will take responsibility for practical day-to-day agronomy across the operation. This is a hands‑on field role requiring regular crop inspection, practical agronomic decision making and close involvement in field activities.

The successful candidate will monitor crop performance, irrigation, fertigation, plant nutrition and plant health, identifying issues and taking appropriate action as conditions change. The role will also coordinate and supervise approximately 10–12 field workers carrying out agricultural activities.

This opportunity is suited to an agronomist who has developed a solid foundation in intensive commercial horticulture and is ready to take greater ownership of crop and field performance. Previous berry experience would be useful but is not essential.

Responsibilities

Crop Management

• Carry out regular field inspections to assess crop condition, development and performance.
• Identify changes in crop requirements and take or recommend appropriate agronomic action.
• Monitor plant health and recognise emerging crop, pest or disease issues.
• Support practical decisions relating to crop management throughout the production cycle.

Irrigation, Fertigation and Nutrition

• Monitor irrigation requirements according to crop condition, environmental factors and production needs.
• Support the effective operation and adjustment of irrigation programmes.
• Monitor fertigation and plant nutrition and contribute to appropriate adjustments according to crop requirements.
• Identify irrigation, fertigation or nutritional issues that may affect crop health, quality or performance.

Field Operations

• Coordinate day-to-day agricultural activities and ensure work is completed correctly and according to operational requirements.
• Work closely with the Field Supervisor to organise field activities and respond to changing crop priorities.
• Support crop protection, cultural operations and other practical production activities.
• Maintain appropriate agronomic and operational records where required.
• Contribute to continuous improvements in crop management and field practices.

People Supervision

• Coordinate and supervise approximately 10–12 field workers involved in agricultural activities.
• Provide clear instructions and ensure field activities are carried out correctly.
• Monitor the quality and completion of work in the field.
• Build effective working relationships with field employees and other members of the production team.

Candidate Requirements

• Approximately 2–5 years of practical agronomy or commercial crop production experience preferred.
• Experience within intensive commercial horticulture, fruit, vegetable or comparable crop production.
• Berry experience is desirable but not essential. Relevant backgrounds may include berries, tomatoes, zucchini (courgettes), grapes, lettuce, green vegetables, hydroponic crops or other intensively managed horticultural crops.
• Practical understanding of irrigation and fertigation, including the ability to recognise and respond to changing crop requirements.
• Experience in crop monitoring, plant nutrition and pest and disease identification or management.
• Comfortable working extensively in the field and making practical crop management decisions.
• Some experience coordinating field workers, agricultural crews or day-to-day operational activities is preferred.
• Degree or relevant qualification in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture or a closely related agricultural discipline.
• Good professional English is required for communication within an international business.
• Able to work independently, identify problems and take responsibility for following actions through to completion.
• Proactive and practical approach, with a genuine interest in commercial crop production.
• Motivated to learn, develop technically and take on increasing responsibility.
• Based in Portugal or willing and able to relocate to the Odemira region.
• Valid driving licence and willingness to travel regionally when required.
• Ability to perform physical field tasks including lifting up to 25 kg.

Remuneration

The salary for this role is up to €39,500 per year, depending on experience and overall fit. Additional benefits include a discretionary performance bonus of up to two months’ salary, a meal allowance of €9 per working day, and one additional day of leave for the employee’s birthday.
