Job Purpose
Spare drivers fill in when permanent drivers are unable to run their routes, and also have frequent opportunities to drive for school sports, field trips and other school charter trips. Becoming a spare driver is also a great way to gain experience and become eligible for permanent routes as vacancies arise.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely and confidently operate a school bus
- Good understanding of, and ability to apply, a range of student behaviour strategies focused on positive reinforcement of desired behaviour
- Demonstrated patience, maturity and experience working with children
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Qualifications
- Must hold and maintain a valid Saskatchewan Class 1-5 Driver's License for at least 2 years.
- Must hold a valid School Bus Endorsement
- Training is available for non‑licensed school bus drivers
- Clear driver's abstract, with no major infractions
- A current Driver’s Abstract from SGI detailing all (personal and commercial) driving records for the last 5 years must be submitted with your application

- Satisfactory medical examinations in accordance with The Highway Traffic Act
- First Aid Certification or be willing to obtain one at Prairie Valley School Division's expense.
Working Conditions
- Bus drivers are paid at daily base rate of $56.44 plus a per km rate calculated at $0.21/km (minimum 90 kms per day)
- Drivers with young children may take their children with them on the bus
- Working in varied climates and differing road conditions
- Physical ability to load and unload students in wheelchairs may be required.
