Job summary

Elasticsearch B.V. is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Elasticsearch - Search Relevance team. This globally distributed team improves search quality and contributes to Lucene-based features.

You will shape technical direction, design and implement new search capabilities, and resolve complex issues. You will work with engineers across continents, writing clean Java, and collaborating asynchronously to deliver fast, scalable search experiences.

Qualifications

• Experience with search or vector databases and algorithms (e.g., HNSW, IVF).
• Strong core Java skills and knowledge of data structures and concurrency.
• Ability to drive technical design end-to-end and guide teammates.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives to deliver industry-leading search engine capabilities.
• Build new search features and fix complex bugs while keeping code maintainable.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team focusing on vector search in Elasticsearch.
• Be an expert on search relevance and drive improvements based on signal and intuition.
• Engage with the open-source community via issues and pull requests, asynchronously when needed.
• Write idiomatic modern Java and contribute to platform-level improvements.
