Elasticsearch B.V. seeks a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search team.

This globally distributed team focuses on a robust vector search experience and advances vector similarity algorithms to improve search relevance. You will work with a distributed team, implement new features, and fix challenging bugs while writing clean, efficient Java code and contributing to open source projects.

Qualifications

• Experience with vector similarity and vector databases using algorithms like HNSW or IVF.
• Strong Java skills and knowledge of data structures and concurrency.
• Ability to work autonomously and guide projects end-to-end, including technical design.
• Collaborative work across remote teams and open source contributions.

Responsibilities

• Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to build an industry-leading vector database with fast, relevant search.
• Contribute to Elasticsearch features and fix bugs, possibly inventing data structures or algorithms.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team on vector search capabilities.
• Serve as an expert on Elasticsearch vector similarity and its impact on search relevance.
• Engage with community members on issues and pull requests, and mentor others.
