Job summary

ING is seeking a Backend Engineer to join a globally distributed squad. You will design, develop, and maintain backend services, with a focus on secure, high-performing applications and modern engineering practices.

Your work includes building RESTful APIs, integrating with databases and messaging systems, and contributing to automated testing and CD pipelines. Strong collaboration in a global team and a commitment to quality are essential.

Qualifications

• 3+ years backend development experience.
• Proficiency in Java (8+; 11+ preferred).
• Strong Spring/Spring Boot experience.
• Hands-on RESTful API development.
• Familiarity with Git or similar VCS.
• Experience in test automation (JUnit, Mockito).
• Solid OOP, design patterns, and TDD fundamentals.
• Effective communication for global collaboration.

Required Skills

We’re looking for individuals with a strong foundation in backend engineering and a collaborative mindset.

Must-have:

• 3+ years of experience in backend development
• Proficiency in Java (Java 8 or higher; Java 11+ preferred)
• Solid experience with Spring and Spring Boot frameworks
• Hands-on experience with RESTful API development
• Familiarity with Git or similar version control tools
• Experience in test automation (e.g., JUnit, Mockito)
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals (OOP, design patterns, TDD)
• Effective communication skills and ability to work in global teams

Nice to have:

• Experience with SQL, JPA, or Hibernate
• Exposure to microservices architecture and containerization
• Experience with CI/CD tools and pipelines
• Agile ways of working and adaptability to change
