Patient Billing & Financial Services Specialist
Position Overview:
We are looking for a detail-oriented and customer-focused Patient Billing & Financial Services Specialist to support healthcare financial operations. This role is responsible for managing patient billing inquiries, explaining insurance coverage, and ensuring accurate and timely resolution of account concerns.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with a solid understanding of medical billing processes, capable of delivering clear guidance while maintaining a high level of professionalism and empathy.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Billing Support
- Serve as the primary contact for patient inquiries related to billing, payments, refunds, and account balances
- Provide accurate and clear explanations of billing statements and account activity
Insurance & Financial Guidance
- Explain patient financial responsibilities, including copays, deductibles, and non-covered services
- Educate patients on insurance benefits and billing processes in a simplified manner
Account Resolution
- Investigate and resolve billing concerns by reviewing claims, payments, and account history
- Identify discrepancies and escalate complex issues as needed
Payment Processing & Assistance
- Process payments and ensure accurate documentation of all interactions
- Assist patients with payment arrangements and available financial assistance programs
Records Accuracy & Compliance
- Maintain accurate patient information, including demographics and account details
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and applicable healthcare regulations
Collaboration & Operations
- Coordinate with internal teams such as insurance follow-up, coding, collections, and front office
- Adhere to established workflows, quality standards, and performance metrics
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to explain complex billing and insurance concepts clearly and professionally
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

- Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills
Minimum Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or equivalent
- At least 2-7 years medical billing experience, particularly in ophthalmology, ambulatory surgery centers, or physician practice settings
- Familiarity with insurance claims, billing processes, and patient collections is highly preferred
- Experience using healthcare systems and billing platforms
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
