I. Job Summary:
The Irrigation Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, management, and continuous optimization of the company's overall irrigation infrastructure. Operating at a mid-to-senior technical level, this role oversees the operational efficiency of deepwell and booster pumps, main transmission lines, distribution networks, and automated control systems. The Irrigation Engineer provides technical leadership, manages maintenance protocols, supervises daily operational teams and third-party contractors, and ensures optimal water resource management and regulatory compliance.
II. Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, direct, and oversee the daily operations and maintenance of all irrigation assets, including deepwell pumps, booster stations, filtration units, and main distribution lines.
- Analyze system performance data, pump curves, and flow rates to optimize water distribution, improve energy efficiency, and minimize operational downtime.
- Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults across the irrigation network and lead corrective maintenance strategies.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of junior engineers, technicians, and field maintenance crews.
- Manage third-party contractors and vendors, ensuring all repairs, installations, and infrastructure projects meet technical specifications, budget constraints, and safety standards.
- Establish, implement, and track Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedules and standardized operational procedures for all pumping and piping assets.
- Conduct regular operational risk assessments, environmental compliance audits, and site inspections under various field conditions.
- Compile comprehensive technical reports, operational budgets, water production logs, and long-term asset management strategies for executive management.
- Design and execute infrastructure upgrade projects, pipeline expansions, and automated control integration (SCADA/Telemetry) as operations scale.
III. Career Progression & Leadership Scope:
- Serves as the primary technical authority for the irrigation department, bridging field execution with executive operational planning.
- Actively mentors Junior Irrigation Engineers and Supervisors to build departmental technical capacity and internal leadership pipelines.
- Evaluated on key performance indicators including asset uptime, water efficiency, project delivery timelines, cost management, and safety compliance.
- Positions the incumbent for future advancement into senior management roles, such as Irrigation Manager or Infrastructure & Facilities Director.
IV. Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- 3-5 years of direct professional experience in large-scale agricultural, commercial, or municipal irrigation operations and pump system management.
- Advanced technical knowledge of hydraulics, deepwell and centrifugal pumps, pressure regulation, pipe networks, and automated flow control systems.
- Proven track record in supervising technical teams, managing contractors, and executing preventive maintenance programs.
- Proficiency in engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, EPANET, or hydraulic modeling tools) and MS Office Suite.
- Strong project management, analytical problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Valid driver's license (preferably for 4-wheel pick-up/utility vehicles) and willingness to conduct extensive field operations.
