Job description

Financial Controller – Garment Manufacturing & Wholesale

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking a strong, hands-on Financial Controller with direct manufacturing experience to oversee the accounting and financial operations of a U.S.-focused garment manufacturing, import/export, and wholesale company. The company works with factories in China and Vietnam to manufacture garments sold to discount retailers and wholesale customers throughout the United States.

The Controller will take ownership of financial reporting, cash-flow planning, international wire transfers, accounts payable and receivable, inventory and landed-cost accounting, and financial controls. This person must understand the complete financial cycle of a product-based business—from purchase orders and factory deposits through production, shipping, customs, warehousing, customer invoicing, and collections.

This is a senior, highly accountable position requiring accuracy, sound judgment, strong follow-through, and the ability to provide management with clear visibility into the company’s cash position, profitability, financial obligations, and risks.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
  • Manage the company’s complete accounting cycle and maintain accurate financial records in QuickBooks Online.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow statements.
  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Develop budgets, financial forecasts, and variance reports.
  • Provide management with accurate reporting on revenue, gross margins, operating expenses, working capital, and profitability.
  • Maintain a proper chart of accounts for manufacturing, importing, inventory, and wholesale operations.
Cash Flow, Banking, and Wire Transfers
  • Monitor the company’s daily cash position and prepare short- and long-term cash-flow forecasts.
  • Ensure sufficient cash is available for factory deposits, production balances, freight, customs duties, payroll, and operating expenses.
  • Prepare, verify, schedule, and track domestic and international wire transfers.
  • Confirm payment instructions, supporting documentation, approvals, exchange rates, bank fees, and payment deadlines before wires are released.
  • Maintain strong banking and payment controls to prevent errors, duplicate payments, and fraud.
  • Reconcile all bank, credit-card, loan, and payment accounts.
  • Proactively alert management about projected cash shortages, large upcoming obligations, overdue receivables, and other liquidity risks.
Manufacturing, Inventory, and Cost Accounting
  • Oversee accounting for garments manufactured by factories in China and Vietnam.
  • Review purchase orders, factory invoices, deposits, production payments, shipping documents, and related expenses.
  • Calculate accurate landed costs, including product costs, international freight, customs duties, tariffs, insurance, brokerage fees, and other import expenses.
  • Track inventory in production, in transit, at warehouses, and available for sale.
  • Reconcile inventory records to the general ledger and investigate shortages, damages, write-offs, and costing discrepancies.
  • Monitor standard and actual costs, factory pricing, product margins, and profitability by customer, order, style, SKU, or product line.
  • Ensure factory deposits, prepaid inventory, goods in transit, finished goods, and cost of goods sold are recorded correctly.
Accounts Payable and Vendor Management
  • Oversee accounts payable and ensure factories and vendors are paid accurately and on time.
  • Match purchase orders, invoices, receiving records, shipping documentation, and approvals before payment.
  • Maintain payment schedules and aging reports for factories, freight providers, customs brokers, warehouses, and other suppliers.
  • Review vendor statements and resolve pricing, quantity, credit, payment, and reconciliation discrepancies.
  • Maintain organized documentation and a complete audit trail for all payments.
Accounts Receivable and Customer Accounting
  • Oversee customer invoicing, collections, cash application, deductions, credits, returns, allowances, and chargebacks.
  • Monitor accounts-receivable aging and follow up on overdue balances.
  • Review retailer deductions, compliance charges, shortages, returns, and chargebacks to ensure they are valid and recorded correctly.
  • Coordinate with sales, operations, and customers to resolve billing and collection issues.
  • Support management in establishing credit limits and payment terms for wholesale customers.
Financial Controls, Compliance, and Leadership
  • Establish and enforce accounting policies, approval requirements, segregation of duties, and internal controls.
  • Protect company assets and confidential financial and banking information.
  • Coordinate with external accountants, tax professionals, auditors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for tax filings, audits, financial reviews, and management requests.
  • Supervise and review the work of accounting staff or bookkeepers, when applicable.
  • Partner with company leadership on purchasing, production, inventory, pricing, and cash-management decisions.
  • Identify weaknesses and implement improvements in accounting processes, reporting, financial controls, and systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller-level or senior accounting responsibilities.
  • Direct accounting or financial-management experience in a manufacturing company is mandatory.
  • Advanced, hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online is required.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, accrual accounting, financial reporting, general-ledger management, and month-end closing.
  • Demonstrated experience with cash-flow forecasting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, inventory, cost of goods sold, and cost accounting.
  • Experience preparing and controlling domestic and international wire transfers.
  • Understanding of purchase orders, factory deposits, freight, customs duties, tariffs, landed costs, goods in transit, and foreign‑currency transactions.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets skills, including pivot tables, lookup formulas, reconciliations, and financial models.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with U.S. management and overseas factories and vendors.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, accuracy, ownership, and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in garment, apparel, textile, import/export, wholesale, consumer‑products, or another inventory‑intensive business.
  • CPA, CMA, or another relevant accounting credential.
  • Experience working with factories or vendors in China and Vietnam.
  • Experience supporting U.S. discount retailers, major retail accounts, or wholesale customers.
  • Familiarity with ERP, inventory‑management, EDI, purchase‑order, or warehouse‑management systems.
  • Experience managing retailer chargebacks, deductions, compliance requirements, and margin reporting.
Schedule and Work Requirements
  • Full-time position based in the Philippines.
  • Must maintain dependable working hours with sufficient overlap with U.S. business hours.
  • Must have a reliable computer, stable high-speed internet connection, and a professional home-office environment.
  • Occasional availability outside normal working hours may be necessary for urgent wires, banking matters, payments, month-end closing, or reporting deadlines.
Success in This Role

The successful Controller will:

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely financial records.
  • Give management dependable visibility into cash flow and upcoming obligations.
  • Ensure international wires and vendor payments are accurate, authorized, and properly controlled.
  • Improve inventory, landed‑cost, and gross‑margin accuracy.
  • Strengthen the company’s accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Provide leadership with reliable financial information for making business decisions.

Important: Applicants without direct manufacturing accounting experience and strong hands‑on QuickBooks Online experience will not be considered.
