Planning, Design and Protection Engineer
As Planning, Design and Protection Engineer, you will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing protection, automation and control systems as well as monitoring their implementation. The system must comply with the company’s protection philosophy and business objectives to develop and operate efficient electrical power systems. You will also simulate and forecast protection methods to safeguard the company’s assets during fault conditions and provide technical assistance across Renewable Energy plants. You will work closely with the Electrical Planning, Design and Protection Team to deliver results, create positive community impact, and develop your skills in a supportive environment.
In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
- Conduct power system fault analysis using simulation software tools to anticipate abnormal/fault system conditions, identify potential problems and determine solutions to protect the system.
- Conceptualize and design protection systems for new and expansion projects, including protection one‑line and schematic diagrams, trip/alarm matrices and input/output assignments.
- Prepare protection settings (engineering & logic) that adequately protect the system components during abnormal and fault conditions; perform coordination studies as necessary.
- Perform relay setting laboratory simulation and recalculate settings based on testing results.
- Evaluate pre‑wired protection and control diagrams for outsourced projects.
- Coordinate approved design on protection and control scheme with project engineers assigned to each project.
- Monitor projects by conducting site inspection, testing and audits to ensure compliance with design and specifications, and review updates from the implementing team.
- Provide technical specifications to Purchasing for relays, CTs, breakers, PTs, etc., to enable accurate procurement.
- Conduct protection system audit and review for existing plants.
- Maintain and review relay settings and coordination internally and with external customers.
- Maintain relay setting database and protection diagrams.
- Develop and update HEDCOR Protection Philosophy, Code and Guidelines.
- Prepare Protection Development Plan.
- Conceptualize and design automation and tele‑protection systems.
- Prepare tele‑protection and control schematic diagrams.
- Prepare tele‑protection system requirements.
- Prepare automation programming and logic settings.
- Maintain database of automation and control design and diagrams.
- Recommend network automation projects.
- Provide resolution to protection and automation/control system problems and troubleshooting.
- Comply with company policies and procedures, safety rules and practices.
- Conform to the company’s Integrated Management Systems, policies, standards, procedures and guidelines.
- Report any Integrated Management System events/incidents or potential events or other risks to the organization.
- Protect information assets from unauthorized access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference.
- Perform any other related duties and responsibilities assigned by immediate superior consistent with the purpose of this role.
To Succeed in this Role, we need someone who:
- Possesses knowledge of electrical standards such as NEC/PEC, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, NFPA.
- Has at least 3 years’ experience in power system protection, automation and control.
- Has experience designing protection systems for substations, switchyards and transmission lines.
- Is skilled in protective relay testing.
- Is knowledgeable in protection system technical specifications.
- Has basic knowledge of protection and coordination.
- Has knowledge of teleprotection, automation and control.
- Can supervise field electrical engineers at site and monitor site activities.
- Is proficient in Project Management.
- Has elevated knowledge in Transmission, Substation, Protection System and Powerhouse Assets and Components.
- Is knowledgeable in both local and international electrical standards as a basis for equipment specifications.
What You Will Need:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 3 years of experience in analysis & protection of power systems, automation, control and protective relay testing.
- Three (3) years experience in a supervisory role.
- Licensed Electrical Engineer or Professional Electrical Engineer.
Project Experience:
- Preferably with experience handling works related to power system protection, automation and control.
Technical / Functional Skills:
- Proficiency in Presentation, MS Suites, Google Suites, Spreadsheets, Project WBS, and Root Cause Analysis.
