Job description

About MAVI

MAVI places experienced finance and accounting professionals into senior, high-ownership roles at high-growth US companies.

We maintain a deliberately high bar on both sides of the placement. The companies we partner with are venture-backed and private equity-backed businesses building modern finance organizations, and the professionals we represent are operators with a track record of owning the numbers rather than supporting them from a distance.

The roles we place are embedded positions within the finance function itself. Our professionals work alongside founders, CEOs, and senior leadership on the work that determines whether a business can close its books with confidence, satisfy its auditors, raise its next round, and scale.

Our team has built and scaled finance functions at companies including Lyft, Ramp, and SoftBank. We remain closely involved throughout the relationship, from role alignment and interview preparation through onboarding, placement, and long-term career development.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Controller to own the accounting function of a high-growth US company, working remotely from LATAM.

This is the senior accounting seat in the business. You will be accountable for the integrity of the financial statements, the discipline of the close, the strength of the control environment, and the readiness of the company for its audit. Where the company has outgrown the processes that carried it this far — a close held together by one person's memory, a control environment that exists in principle rather than in practice, an intercompany process that produces a different answer each quarter — you will be the person who rebuilds them.

You will work directly with the CEO, the finance leadership, and the department heads whose decisions depend on your numbers. A significant part of the role is translating accounting information into something people outside finance can act on, and doing so before they ask.

Because you will be the most senior accounting person in the company and located outside the United States, the role calls for someone who operates well with autonomy, communicates proactively rather than on request, and holds both the technical detail and the operating picture without a layer above them to catch what falls through.

What You'll Own
The Close and the Financial Statements

The close. Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, with full accountability for the calendar, the quality of the output, and the cycle time.

The financial statements. Own the preparation of the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement under US GAAP, and stand behind those numbers in front of leadership, auditors, and the board.

Final review. Hold final review authority over general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and fixed assets.

Technical accounting. Research, document, and conclude on technical positions — revenue recognition, leases, equity, accruals, and capitalisation — and maintain the memoranda that support them.

Multi-entity accounting. Own consolidation across the group structure, including intercompany accounting, eliminations, and foreign currency translation.

Controls, Policy, and Audit

Policies and controls. Establish and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, approval workflows, and reporting standards appropriate to the company's stage, and enforce them once established.

Documentation. Build and maintain the close checklist, process narratives, and SOPs that allow the function to operate without depending on any single individual.

Audit. Lead the annual audit or review end to end, including auditor management, PBC preparation, and resolution of findings through to close-out.

Tax coordination. Coordinate US federal, state, and local tax compliance with external CPA firms, and own the accounting inputs those firms depend on.

Accounting Operations

The transactional cycle. Own AP, AR, payroll accounting, and expense processing, holding each to defined turnaround and accuracy standards.

Balance sheet integrity. Ensure reconciling items are resolved rather than carried forward, and that every balance has support a reviewer can follow.

Cash reporting. Maintain accurate cash reporting and reconciliation, and provide leadership with a reliable view of position and movement.

Business partnership. Provide FP&A and department leaders with the reporting packages, KPIs, variance analysis, and root-cause explanation that budgeting and forecasting depend on.

Team and Systems

The accounting team. Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, and manage external accounting and bookkeeping partners against agreed standards and deadlines.

Finance systems. Lead ERP selection, implementation, and migration, alongside AP, expense, and close-management automation.

Process design. Build accounting processes that improve accuracy, visibility, and cycle time as the company grows, rather than processes that break at the next stage.

What We're Looking For

8-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including direct leadership and development of an accounting team Demonstrated ownership of the close and the financial statements on an independent basis, rather than contribution to someone else's Strong command of US GAAP, including revenue recognition (ASC 606) and leases (ASC 842); familiarity with stock-based compensation (ASC 718) is an advantage Experience with multi-entity accounting, consolidation, and intercompany elimination A track record of designing accounting processes and controls from the ground up, or of taking on underperforming processes and rebuilding them Experience leading an audit or review, including direct management of external auditors through to resolution of findings Substantial ERP experience with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, QuickBooks Online, or Xero, alongside familiarity with modern finance tooling such as Ramp, Brex, Bill.com, Rippling, Gusto, or FloQast Advanced Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets; Power BI or comparable reporting tools an advantage Experience acting as the senior accounting partner to executive leadership, including presenting results and defending conclusions Comfort operating within a lean team, with the seniority to own the function and the willingness to prepare the entry yourself when circumstances require it Experience working remotely with US-based leadership, auditors, and CPA firms, with the communication discipline that arrangement requires Excellent written and verbal English, with the confidence to hold the room in a leadership or audit setting Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

Preferred

CPA, Contador Público, CRC-registered Contador, CA, CMA, ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent professional qualification strongly preferred Big 4 or comparable public accounting experience followed by industry experience Experience at a venture-backed or PE-backed US company, particularly from Seed through Series C Direct experience carrying a first audit or an ERP implementation end to end is highly regarded SaaS, professional services, or recurring-revenue experience, including deferred revenue and the mechanics of ARR Board, lender, and management reporting experience Exposure to US multi-state tax, international entities, or transfer pricing is welcome

Who This Role Is For

This role is well suited to an accounting leader who wants to own a function outright rather than administer one part of it.

You are technically strong enough to reach a defensible conclusion without escalating it, and operationally strong enough to make sure the process behind it holds up next quarter. You build the discipline the company needs at each stage instead of waiting for it to be handed to you, and you are equally credible in a room with a CEO, an auditor, and a junior accountant.

Above all, you identify issues early, communicate them clearly to the people who need to know, and arrive with a practical recommendation rather than only a number.

Why Join Through MAVI

Own an entire accounting function, end to end, with direct exposure to founders and senior leadership

Build the accounting infrastructure of a growing company rather than maintaining someone else's

Work to US GAAP with US auditors and US systems, on the standard that opens international opportunities

Sit close to the decisions that depend on your numbers, with visible impact on the outcome

Progress toward Head of Finance and Fractional CFO opportunities through MAVI

Work remotely with US-based leadership, in substantial overlap with the US business day

Receive MAVI's support throughout placement, onboarding, and the engagement that follows

Work Arrangement

This is a fully remote role. You will work directly with US-based leadership, auditors, and external partners, and you will be placed with a single client company for the duration of the engagement rather than rotated across accounts.

Candidates based in LATAM will maintain near-full overlap with the US business day. Candidates based in India should expect a structured afternoon-to-evening schedule providing a firm overlap against US Eastern hours.
