Job Description
- A Brewer is responsible for the production of beer, overseeing the brewing process from start to finish. Their duties typically include:
- Brewing Operations: Preparing and brewing beer using ingredients like malt, hops, yeast, and water. Ensuring all brewing processes are conducted efficiently and safely.
- Recipe Development: Developing and testing new beer recipes, including adjusting ingredients and brewing techniques to create desired flavors, styles, and qualities.
- Quality Control: Monitoring the brewing process to ensure quality, consistency, and safety of the final product. Conducting regular tests to evaluate the taste, clarity, and carbonation of the beer.
- Fermentation Management: Managing fermentation cycles and ensuring proper temperature and timing for optimal results.
- Equipment Maintenance: Operating and maintaining brewing equipment, ensuring it is clean and functioning properly. Troubleshooting any issues that arise during production.
- Inventory and Supplies: Monitoring inventory levels of ingredients and materials, and ordering supplies as needed to ensure continuous production.
- Sanitation: Maintaining a clean and sanitary brewing environment to prevent contamination and ensure product quality.
- Record Keeping: Documenting recipes, processes, and any issues encountered during production. Keeping detailed records of batches and production schedules.
- Collaboration: Working closely with other brewers, production staff, and management to meet production goals and improve brewing efficiency.
- Packaging: Overseeing the packaging of beer into bottles, cans, or kegs, ensuring proper labeling and storage.
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required.
Experience
- Previous experience in brewing or working in a brewery is preferred, especially for positions requiring advanced skills.
- Entry-level brewers may receive on-the-job training.
- Experience with brewing equipment and processes is essential.
Skills
- Technical knowledge of brewing methods, ingredients, and equipment.
- Attention to detail for maintaining consistency and quality of beer.
- Problem-solving skills to address production issues, equipment failures, or process improvements.
- Mathematical skills to measure ingredients and monitor fermentation parameters.
- Physical stamina to lift heavy equipment, stand for long periods, and work in a physically demanding environment.
Knowledge of Brewing Equipment
- Familiarity with various brewing equipment (mash tuns, fermenters, kegging systems, etc.) and cleaning procedures.
Ability to Work in a Team
- Brewers often work closely with other staff, so good communication and teamwork skills are important.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to handle the physical demands of brewing, including lifting heavy ingredients and equipment, standing for long periods, and working in a warm environment.
