Job summary

Manulife Financial is seeking a Balance Sheet Substantiation COE – Senior Finance Analyst to ensure accuracy and compliance of balance sheet accounts, enhance reconciliation processes, and support financial reporting. The role collaborates with regional offices and business units to improve governance and efficiency in balance sheet substantiation.

The team covers Controllership, period close, financial reporting, GL/suspense reconciliations, expense reporting, management reporting, and FP&A.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation is an advantage.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting operations and/or financial reporting experience; insurance industry preferred.
• Strong stakeholder management, persuasion, relationship-building and negotiation skills.
• Experience in shared services/offshore teams is an advantage.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Advanced Excel skills; Power BI is advantageous.
• Self-starter with attention to detail and ownership mindset.
• Strong written and oral communication for interaction with senior officers.

Responsibilities

• Drive standard balance sheet substantiation processes and own end-to-end accuracy.
• Perform accurate balance sheet reconciliations, including insurance-related accounts.
• Provide timely, insightful substantiation commentary for business reviews and decisions.
• Collaborate with regional teams and business units to ensure completeness of information.
• Ensure balances are stated in line with IFRS17, GAAP and company policy.
• Identify and resolve reconciliation discrepancies with Finance partners.
• Escalate unresolved issues to the COE manager and participate in governance meetings.
• Maintain documentation and audit trails for reconciliation activities.
• Share best practices and implement process improvements for efficiency.
• Identify appropriate tools (Anaplan, Alteryx, PowerSuite, Workiva) to support improvements.
• Utilize Enterprise Data Lake as main data source for reconciliation and analysis.
• Act as process owner for the end-to-end balance sheet substantiation process.
• Provide guidance and training to junior team members.
