Job description

MAVI places experienced finance and accounting professionals into high-ownership roles at high-growth US companies. We maintain a deliberately high bar on both sides of the placement.

The companies we partner with are venture-backed and private equity-backed businesses building modern finance organizations, and the professionals we represent are operators with a track record of owning the numbers rather than supporting them from a distance.

Our team has built and scaled finance functions at companies including Lyft, Ramp, and SoftBank. We remain closely involved throughout the relationship, from role alignment and interview preparation through onboarding, placement, and long-term career development.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Team Lead to run the day-to-day accounting operation for US-based client companies, working remotely from Mexico.

This is a working leadership role reporting to the Controller or Head of Accounting. You will run the close, lead a small team of accountants and bookkeepers, and serve as the first line of review over the work they produce. It is a player-coach seat: you will review other people's entries in the morning and prepare the difficult ones yourself in the afternoon.

Where the team is carrying a process that no longer works — a reconciliation nobody has cleared in three quarters, a schedule maintained outside the ledger, a close step that only one person knows how to perform — you will be the one who works it out, fixes it, and writes it down so it survives the next handover.

You will work closely with the Controller and with the US-based finance leadership, and directly with the operators whose transactions land in your accounts. A significant part of the role is explaining what moved and why, in terms someone outside accounting can act on, before the question is asked.

Because your team sits outside the United States and the leadership you support does not, the role calls for someone who runs their team without needing to be managed through it, escalates early rather than at review, and keeps the close on schedule across a time difference.

What You'll Own
The Close and Financial Reporting
  • The close. Run the monthly, quarterly, and annual close day to day — assign the work, hold the calendar, and deliver a complete close on schedule.
  • The financial statements. Prepare the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement under US GAAP for Controller review, and answer for the numbers your team produced.
  • First-line review. Review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules prepared by the team, and send nothing upward that you have not satisfied yourself on.
  • Revenue. Maintain revenue recognition under ASC 606, including the schedules and the deferred revenue roll-forward, and escalates arrangements that do not fit the established treatment.
  • Consolidation. Prepare multi-entity accounting, intercompany balances, eliminations, and foreign currency translation.
  • Reporting packages. Prepare the monthly and quarterly reporting packages and variance analysis, with root-cause commentary rather than a restatement of the variance.
Controls, Documentation, and Audit Support
  • Controls in practice. Operate and enforce the company's accounting policies, internal controls, and approval workflows within your team, and flag where a control is being followed in form but not in substance.
  • Documentation. Build and maintain the close checklist, process narratives, and standard operating procedures so the function does not depend on any single individual — including you.
  • Audit. Coordinate the team's audit deliverables, prepare and review PBC items, and respond directly to auditor queries in your areas through to resolution.
  • External partners. Act as the day-to-day point of contact for outsourced bookkeeping partners and US tax advisers, holding them to agreed standards and deadlines.
Accounting Operations and Team
  • The transactional cycle. Oversee the general ledger, AP, AR, payroll accounting, and expense processing, holding each to defined turnaround and accuracy standards.
  • Reconciliations. Own the balance sheet reconciliation process and the resolution of ageing items, rather than the reporting of them.
  • Cash reporting. Prepare accurate cash reporting and the rolling cash forecast.
  • The team. Assign and review the work of accounting staff and bookkeepers, mentor them, raise their standard of output, and give the Controller an honest read on where each person stands.
  • Systems and process. Work within NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, or a comparable platform, support ERP implementation and migration work, and propose process changes that shorten cycle time rather than working around the problem each month.
What We're Looking For
  • 6–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including review of or direct responsibility for other accountants' work
  • Demonstrated ownership of a full close cycle end to end, rather than contribution to one part of it
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP, with practical depth in revenue recognition (ASC 606); leases (ASC 842) and stock-based compensation (ASC 718) are an advantage
  • Experience preparing full financial statements, including cash flow, for review
  • Strong reconciliation discipline and the judgment to know when a balance does not look right
  • Experience supporting an audit, including PBC preparation and direct response to auditor queries
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting, consolidation, and intercompany elimination
  • A track record of tightening a process that was not working, and documenting it so it stayed fixed
  • Substantial ERP experience with NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, or a comparable platform, alongside familiarity with modern finance tooling such as Ramp, Brex, Bill.com, or Rippling
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets, including comfort building schedules others can follow
  • Experience working remotely with US-based leadership, auditors, and CPA firms, with the communication discipline that arrangement requires
  • Excellent written and verbal English, with the ability to explain an accounting outcome clearly to someone outside finance
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Preferred
  • Big 4 or comparable public accounting experience followed by industry experience
  • Experience at a venture-backed or PE-backed US company, particularly from Seed through Series C
  • Formal experience managing or supervising a small accounting team
  • Experience through a first audit or an ERP implementation
  • SaaS or recurring-revenue experience, including deferred revenue and the mechanics of ARR
Who This Role Is For

This role is well suited to a strong accountant who is ready to carry a team as well as their own work.

You are technically strong enough to reach a supportable conclusion and show your work, and disciplined enough that the reconciliation behind it still holds up next quarter. You notice when a number does not make sense and follow it until it does. You are comfortable reviewing someone else's work and telling them plainly when it is not right, and equally comfortable being reviewed yourself.

Above all, you surface issues early, communicate them clearly to the people who need to know, and arrive with a proposed answer rather than only a question.

Why Join Through MAVI
  • Run the close and lead a team, with direct visibility to the Controller and US finance leadership
  • Build the accounting processes a growing company runs on rather than maintaining someone's else
  • Work to US GAAP with US auditors and US systems, on the standard that opens international opportunities
  • Gain exposure to audit, ERP implementation, and control build-outs earlier than a comparable in-house role would offer
  • Progress toward Accounting Manager, Controller, and Head of Accounting opportunities through MAVI
  • Work remotely from Mexico in full overlap with the US business day
Work Arrangement

This is a fully remote role based in Mexico. You will be placed with a single US client company for the duration of the engagement rather than rotated across accounts, and you will work directly with US-based leadership, auditors, and external partners.

Core availability sits within the Mexican business day and provides full coverage of US Eastern hours. There is no overnight requirement.
