The Accounting Department Head is responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Finance Team, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial records and reports. This role focuses on review, control, compliance, and strategic financial oversight rather than routine data encoding. The position plays a key role in financial governance, taxation, process improvement, and management reporting, while providing leadership and guidance to finance officers.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Oversight
- Supervise, mentor, and manage the Finance Team, ensuring proper task delegation, performance monitoring, and professional development.
- Review and approve the work of finance officers, including journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Establish clear workflows, internal controls, and accountability within the finance function.
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee general accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet account reconciliations, and monthly and year-end closing activities.
- Review and validate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports prior to submission to Management.
- Perform high-level financial analysis and provide insights, variance analysis, and recommendations to support business decisions.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of management reports in accordance with prescribed deadlines.
Transaction Oversight & Controls
- Oversee the validation and verification of all sales transactions, payment methods, and transaction charges.
- Ensure all credit card, bank, and other financial transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and accounted for.
- Monitor accounts receivable and accounts payable activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Review and resolve invoicing issues, accounting discrepancies, and other financial irregularities.
Taxation & Compliance
- Oversee all tax-related matters, including preparation, review, and timely filing of national and local tax returns (e.g., VAT, withholding taxes, income tax, and other statutory filings).
- Ensure compliance with applicable tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and tax consultants during audits, assessments, and tax examinations.
- Identify tax risks and opportunities for optimization while ensuring full regulatory compliance.
Systems, Processes & Internal Controls
- Design, implement, review, and continuously improve accounting systems, tools, and internal control procedures.
- Ensure proper documentation and adherence to accounting policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Review financial paperwork and processes, recommend improvements, and implement necessary changes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Banking & Cash Management
- Oversee payment processing, bank transfers, and other banking transactions.
- Monitor cash flow, bank balances, and funding requirements to ensure operational efficiency.
- Ensure timely settlement of obligations and proactive recovery of outstanding receivables.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or senior role preferred.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and taxation.
- Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems such as SAP, QuickBooks, or similar platforms.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and financial analysis tools.
- High attention to detail with strong review and quality control skills.
- Proven ability to lead, manage, and work collaboratively with a team.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise with management and external stakeholders.
