Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Maintain official safety inspection logs and report defects or expired inventory to the Chief Officer.
• Inspect fixed fire-fighting systems, portable extinguishers, hoses, breathing apparatus and emergency equipment.
• Inspect and test lifeboats, rescue boats, davits, launching gear and immersion suits.
• Serve as Safety Officer on vessels, overseeing Life-Saving Appliances and Fire-Fighting Appliances readiness.
• Monitor meteorological conditions and log weather, pressure and visibility readings.
• Plot vessel positions, monitor course, check gyro/magnetic compass errors, and follow passage plans.
• Maintain safe navigation, collision avoidance, and lookout per COLREGs.
• Stand navigational bridge watches (typical 3-watch rotations).

Navigation & Watchkeeping

Safety & Fire-Fighting Equipment (LSA / FFA)

Maintain official safety inspection logs and report defects or expired inventory to the Chief Officer.

Inspect fixed fire-fighting systems ($CO_2$, water mist, foam), portable fire extinguishers, fire hoses, breathing apparatus (SCBA), and emergency equipment.

Inspect and test lifeboats, rescue boats, davits, launching gear, immersion suits, lifejackets, and pyrotechnics.

Serve as the designated Safety Officer on many vessels, overseeing the maintenance and readiness of Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire-Fighting Appliances (FFA).

Monitor meteorological conditions and log weather, barometric pressure, and visibility readings.

Plot vessel positions, monitor course line, check gyro and magnetic compass errors, and execute passage plan instructions provided by the 2nd Officer.

Maintain safe navigation, collision avoidance, and lookout in accordance with COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea).

Stand regular navigational bridge watches (typically 0800–1200 / 2000–2400 in standard 3-watch rotations).
