Job Description
The CAD Modeller works within the Engineering team and is responsible for producing and maintaining accurate, robust and manufacturable 3D CAD models, assemblies and associated model data using Autodesk Inventor. The role translates concepts, 2D layouts, sketches, markups, specifications and other approved design information into detailed, well-structured 3D product models that accurately capture design intent.
The role applies strong practical knowledge of parametric modelling, component geometry, fit, interfaces, clearances, materials, fastening, assembly relationships and product configurations. It maintains model integrity through effective use of Inventor Model States, BOM information, iProperties and disciplined Autodesk Vault practices, and provides complete, drawing-ready information for subsequent documentation, checking and release.
This is a hands-on technical role requiring accuracy, efficiency, initiative and dependable delivery. The role is accountable for thoroughly self-checking its work, identifying gaps and manufacturability concerns early, seeking clarification where required, and completing allocated work to a consistently high standard within agreed priorities and timeframes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work from concepts, 2D layouts, sketches, mark-ups, specifications and other design information to construct accurate and complete 3D product models.
- Create and modify well-structured parametric parts, subassemblies and assemblies in Autodesk Inventor using robust, stable and maintainable modelling practices.
- Develop detailed component geometry, fit, interfaces, clearances, fastening, material thicknesses, assembly relationships and other information necessary to support manufacture and assembly.
- Create and manage Inventor Model States for product variants, manufacturing stages and assembly configurations, maintaining model, iProperty, BOM and downstream drawing integrity across each state.
- Model sheet metal, fabricated, machined, moulded and purchased components, together with multi-part assemblies, with appropriate consideration of manufacturing and assembly requirements.
- Critically review source information, identify gaps, conflicts, inconsistencies and manufacturability concerns, and seek timely clarification rather than making unapproved design assumptions.
- Maintain logical model and assembly structures, constraints, references, file relationships and feature organisation so that models remain stable, editable and suitable for controlled product changes.
- Apply accurate materials, part numbers, iProperties, BOM data and other required metadata in accordance with established CAD standards and downstream information requirements.
- Prepare model-based views, exploded views, presentation files and other supporting CAD information required for subsequent drawing, documentation, review and manufacturing activities.
- Thoroughly self-check all work before handover, including geometry, fit, clearances, interference, component quantities, assembly relationships, model-state behaviour, materials, metadata, manufacturability and alignment with approved design information.
- Provide complete and clearly structured drawing-ready handovers, including the required files, model states, component and assembly information, relevant notes, identified assumptions and any unresolved matters requiring attention.
- Respond promptly and constructively to model-related questions and accurately incorporate changes arising from technical, drawing-quality, manufacturability and design-intent reviews.
- Use Autodesk Vault correctly and consistently, maintaining accurate file relationships, versions and associated data and following established check-in, check-out, naming, storage and revision-control processes.
- Follow applicable CAD standards, templates, part-numbering conventions, file-naming conventions, document controls and engineering-change processes.
- Complete work in accordance with allocated priorities, providing realistic time estimates, regular progress updates and early notice of unclear requirements, technical risks or potential delays.
- Support prototype development, product updates, engineering changes and production problem-solving by preparing, reviewing and updating the required 3D models and associated CAD information.
- Contribute to modelling efficiency and consistency through standardisation, appropriate reuse of approved components and the development and application of reliable modelling practices.
- Share practical knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, Model States, Autodesk Vault and effective modelling methods with team members, including providing guidance and technical support where this assists the accurate and efficient completion of work.
- Maintain accurate task and project records and participate effectively in work planning, meetings, training, technical reviews and continuous-improvement activities.
- Protect the business’ intellectual property and confidential information, comply with applicable information-security and data-handling requirements, adhere to organisational policies and values, and perform other reasonable duties aligned with the role’s capabilities.
Qualifications and Requirements
SKILLS
- High-level hands-on proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, including parametric parts, multipart assemblies, assembly constraints, sheet metal and stable model construction.
- Strong practical capability in Inventor Model States and a sound understanding of their effect on parts, assemblies, iProperties, BOMs and downstream drawings.
- Sound working knowledge of Autodesk Vault and disciplined management of CAD files, file relationships, versions, revisions, part numbers, iProperties and BOM information.
- Ability to accurately interpret concepts, 2D layouts, sketches, mark-ups, specifications and technical instructions and translate them into complete 3D geometry.
- Strong mechanical modelling and detailing capability, including component fit, clearances, interfaces, fasteners, material thicknesses, assembly relationships and assembly sequencing.
- Sound knowledge of common manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly principles, particularly in relation to sheet metal and fabricated products.
- Strong analytical and practical problem-solving skills, including the ability to recognise missing information, identify potential issues and ask clear and precise questions.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to model integrity, interference checking, self-review, file management and revision control.
- Ability to work efficiently, manage competing priorities and deliver dependable, accurate and complete outputs within agreed timeframes.
- Strong work ethic, self-discipline and personal accountability, with a demonstrated commitment to following assigned work through to completion.
- Excellent spoken and written English, with the ability to understand technical instructions, explain issues clearly, document relevant information and collaborate responsively through review and revision cycles.
