Job summary

New Zealand Red Cross in Wellington is seeking an experienced Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and support volunteers who assist refugee families and individuals. You will run interviews, placements and ongoing support through meetings, phone, and email.

The role emphasizes building networks, creative recruitment, and ensuring volunteers are matched to teams, with strong cross-cultural understanding and commitment to Red Cross principles.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of refugee resettlement in NZ, or cross-cultural experience.
• Experience coordinating volunteers.
• Ability to build, sustain and manage relationships and networks.
• Relevant tertiary qualification in social sciences, development studies or public health.
• Reliability, honesty and a sense of humour.
• Commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, interview, place and support trained Volunteer Support Workers, ensuring they are well matched to teams and equipped to succeed.
• Develop creative recruitment and promotional initiatives, including speaking engagements, to respond to changing volunteer needs.
• Coordinate tailored volunteer support, providing practical guidance and assistance with complex or emotional issues in close liaison with the client team.
• Maintain volunteer engagement through regular communication, recognition and opportunities for ongoing involvement, while accurately recording progress and reporting information.
• Build strong community, agency and government networks, and promote public understanding of refugee resettlement and supportive receiving communities.
