Job description

Do you have a heart for supporting people and want to make a real difference in your community? Christchurch City Mission is looking for a warm, reliable and compassionate Weekend Night Shift Support Worker to join our supportive team.

This is a meaningful opportunity to support residents overnight, helping to create a safe, respectful and welcoming environment for people as they work through different challenges.

About Christchurch City Mission

The Christchurch City Mission (Te Whare Mīhana Ki Ōtautahi) helps anyone in need, no matter their situation. We work with people going through tough times—whether it’s because of job loss, housing issues, addiction, family problems, or financial stress.

We respond to both immediate crises and long-term challenges. Our services aim to help people gain the confidence and skills to live independently and feel proud of themselves. We've seen lives change with our support and believe everyone deserves a second chance.

About the role

20 hours per week: Wednesday 5pm-9pm, Friday & Saturday 11pm-7.00am (overnight awake shifts)

As our Weekend Night Shift Support Worker, you’ll help ensure residents feel safe, supported and respected overnight. This is an awake shift role where your calm presence, good judgement and practical support will make a genuine difference.

You’ll be involved in resident checks, light housekeeping, administration, medication oversight and clear record keeping. There may also be opportunities to pick up additional casual shifts during the week.

You’ll receive training and ongoing professional development, and you’ll be part of a team that cares about the people we support and the people we work alongside.

About you

You’ll be someone who is compassionate, dependable and able to stay calm under pressure. You’ll enjoy working with people, be confident using your initiative and be comfortable working overnight awake shifts.

Ideally, you will bring:

  • A Level 4 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, or equivalent experience
  • Reliability and a willingness to be part of a supportive team
  • Great communication and people skills
  • Knowledge of Canterbury’s AOD and social services, which would be helpful
  • An understanding of social justice, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and relevant legislation
  • The ability to manage time well, stay calm under pressure and make sound decisions
  • Commitment to respectful, inclusive, and ethical practice
  • Confidence using IT systems and completing reporting requirements
  • Comfortable working in a values-led, Christian-based organisation
What we offer

In return, we offer a meaningful role in a friendly and supportive team environment where no two shifts are quite the same. You’ll receive a wellbeing allowance and a day off for your birthday, along with the satisfaction of contributing to work that makes a real difference in the community.

If you want to discuss the role further, please contact Simon Rouch simon@citymission.org.nz.

At Christchurch City Mission, we want everyone to feel welcome, respected and able to be themselves. We value diversity and celebrate the unique strengths each person brings. If you have any support or access requirements, please let us know when you apply so we can support you through the recruitment process.

Note: Applicants must have NZ/AU citizenship, residency, or a valid work visa.
