Job summary

Christchurch City Mission is seeking a compassionate Community / Peer Support Worker to help whaiora on their recovery journey within Alcohol and Other Drug Services. You will provide day-to-day support, foster a safe and recovery-focused environment, and work with clinical teams to deliver person-centred care.

The role is part-time (25–30 hours per week). Applicants should have a Level 4 Health and Wellbeing qualification or equivalent experience, plus a NZ Driver Licence.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting people to work towards their goals and aspirations.
  • Warm, respectful, and non-judgemental approach.
  • Understanding of addiction, mental health, trauma and recovery.
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural development.
  • Current NZ Driver Licence and basic documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day support to whaiora accessing Alcohol and Other Drug services.
  • Build trusting relationships and engage in programme activities.
  • Notice changes in wellbeing and raise concerns promptly.
  • Maintain client records accurately and timely.
  • Collaborate with case managers, clinicians, nursing staff, and support services.
  • Participate in supervision, training, and service improvement activities.

Are you someone who naturally builds trust, listens without judgement, and wants your work to make a real difference?

We're looking for a compassionate and reliable Community / Peer Support Worker to join our Alcohol and Other Drug Services team.

In this role, you'll work alongside whaiora as they navigate their recovery journey, providing practical support, encouragement, and connection. You'll help create a safe, welcoming, and therapeutic environment where people feel respected, supported, and empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

About the Role

As a Community / Peer Support Worker, you'll provide day-to-day support to whaiora accessing our Alcohol and Other Drug services. Working alongside clinical, case management, and nursing staff, you'll contribute to a coordinated and person-centred approach that supports recovery, wellbeing, and positive life change.

This is a part-time position, working 25-30 hours per week.

What You'll Do
  • Build trusting and respectful relationships with whaiora accessing the service.
  • Support people to engage in programme activities and work towards their personal goals.
  • Notice changes in wellbeing and raise concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and recovery-focused environment.
  • Work closely with case managers, clinicians, nursing staff, and community support services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely client records and documentation.
  • Participate in supervision, training, team meetings, and service improvement activities.
What You'll Bring

  • Level 4 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, or equivalent experience.
  • A current full New Zealand Driver Licence.

Experience working within health, social services, community support, mental health, addiction, or related sectors would be highly regarded. Experience supporting people experiencing trauma, homelessness, or other complex challenges would be advantageous.
