Job summary

Stepping Stone Trust in Christchurch is seeking a dedicated Support Worker to join our Crisis Respite service. You will work with tāngata and a supportive team to provide short-term care in a homely environment, helping guests feel able to face the world again.

The role is available across permanent full-time, part-time and casual shifts, including evenings and night awake, with responsibilities ranging from intake and exit management to administering medications and helping with daily living

Qualifications

• Compassionate and caring nature with good communication skills.
• Willingness to commit to Stepping Stone Trust's bicultural journey under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
• Experience or willingness to work in mental health to support recovery.
• Ability to engage and motivate people in a wide range of situations to achieve quality outcomes.
• Computer literacy, including basic documentation and reporting.
• Full, clean driver’s licence.
• Ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and tāngata.

Responsibilities

• Work with tāngata and staff to manage referrals, intake and exit while maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment.
• Support tāngata in working towards goals recommended by referrers.
• Assist tāngata in connecting with external agencies for ongoing support after leaving respite.
• Engage with tāngata to assess wellbeing and provide advocacy and emotional support.
• Assist/complete individual documentation and external reporting.
• Administer medications in collaboration with other staff.
• Support daily living tasks and relationships within residential settings.
• Collaborate with the team to maintain cooking and cleaning tasks and residential routines.

Our fast-paced Crisis Respite service, located in Domain Terrace, provides short-term support for people experiencing mental distress and crisis. We provide a homely and supportive environment, so that when guests leave, they feel able to face the world again. We are looking for a new team member who has a caring and empathetic nature and a passion for making a difference in the lives of our tāngata.

Mō Te Tūnga | About The role

This role would suit someone who has significant experience working in the mental health sector.

We have permanent full-time, part-time, Casual, opportunities available across a range of shifts, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and night awake. If you're looking for a rewarding career supporting people to live meaningful lives, we'd love to hear from you!

You will be required to:

• Work alongside tāngata and other staff to manage the high turnover of referrals, the intake and exit of Crisis Respite guests while maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for people to stay.
• Support tāngata in working towards the goals recommended by the referrers.
• Support tāngata in connecting with external agencies for ongoing support after leaving respite.
• Engage with tāngata to assess and assist with their wellbeing and be an advocate and emotional support where necessary.
• Assist/complete individual documentation, and necessary external reporting.
• Administer medications in collaboration with other staff.
• Support the daily living processes and relationships within residential environments.
• Work together within the team to maintain and achieve the required cooking and cleaning tasks which create a homely environment.
• Implement residential routines.

We would like you to have the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with tāngata and colleagues. You will be a skilled Support Worker whocan support tāngata in a culturally safe way.

In this role we want you to:

• You have a compassionate and caring nature with good communication skills and a strong work ethic.
• A New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) or a relevant qualification with recognized mental health equivalency.
• A willingness to commit to and support the bicultural journey that Stepping Stone Trust is on as we live out our partnership under Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
• Focus on the recovery of our tāngata by ensuring that their needs are met.
• The skills to engage and motivate people in a wide range of situations to achieve quality outcomes.
• A certain degree of computer literacy.
• A full, clean driver’s licence.
• The ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and tāngata.
• Assist with meal preparation and housework.
